The best football matches to be played in the month of August

August marks the start of the top five leagues in Europe and the fans eagerly wait for the football matches of their favourite teams. While some European domestic leagues, such as the Bundesliga and the Premier League, have already played their last matchday.

The 2022–23 football season for the top leagues in Europe came to a close with the Champions League final.

Before the 2023–24 season begins in August, there will be tonnes of football excitement happening across the globe to keep you glued to the television.

There is football to watch in the coming weeks, as the most entertaining sports will once again resume across different countries.

10. Manchester City vs Sevilla

The UEFA Super Cup is the customary season-opener for European football and always arrives earlier than planned.

It is one of the earliest opportunities to determine whether a side has capitalised on its success or allowed standards to slide. The match is played each year between the Champions League and Europa League champions from the previous campaign.

The two clubs squaring off in the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis in Piraeus, Greece, this season are Manchester City and Sevilla. While Sevilla has won the Europa League seven times and has experienced it all, City is participating in the Super Cup for the first time.

9. Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid

Any football game between Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid is referred to as El Otro Clásico (The Other Classic). This match was the most watched in Spanish football history up until December 10, 2011, when El Clásico (between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona) overtook it. Even though only five of the 56 games took place in the twenty-first century, it continues to be the game with the greatest attendance in the Copa del Rey.

Real will play Bilbao in their opening match of the 2023–24 season after being active in the transfer market and significantly strengthening their midfield, with Mbappe joining them. Rumours are expected to last until deadline day.

8. Getafe vs Barcelona

Barcelona have done a respectable job of strengthening their team throughout the transfer window, but they still need to recruit a right-back and a midfielder in order to compete in the Champions League for the upcoming season.

They will play Getafe, who finished last season in 15th place, to kick off their 2023–24 campaign. Getafe plans to make a statement in the upcoming season and hopes to start off their new campaign with a surprise.

7. PSG vs Lorient

PSG may be sick of winning the league because their ultimate ambition has been to win the Champions League, which they have failed to do each year. In an effort to win the European championship, the club purchased Lionel Messi, but he has since departed, and even their star Kylian Mbappe is on the precipice of departing.

They have made several solid transfers, but Luis Enrique’s appointment as manager is a wise management shift. After placing 10th in Ligue 1, Lorient would be preparing to take a fresh approach the following year.

6. Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich

As the two teams close up the 2023–24 season, there is hardly a more appropriate match to begin the Bundesliga’s 60-year history than Werder Bremen vs. Bayern Munich.

The opening match of the 2023–24 Bundesliga season is set for August 18, just under 60 years after Bremen took the pitch in the league’s inaugural match against Borussia Dortmund on August 24, 1963.

The Green-Whites won that day despite giving up the opening goal, and they have since played in another 1967 Bundesliga game, a total only surpassed by record champions Bayern (1976).

5. Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid

This weekend’s games in the 2023–24 season of La Liga are back, with Real Betis playing Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid team in a crucial match.

Atletico Madrid finished third in the standings the previous season and intends to contend for the championship the following one. Real Betis will need to improve this season, but they also need to perform at their highest level while playing an impressive club.

4. Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

Last season, under Erik Ten Hag, Manchester United finally won their first trophy since 2017, advanced to the FA Cup final, and finished fourth to win a Champions League spot. Before playing Tottenham, they hope to start their new season with a win by strengthening their vital positions, such as custodian and striker, during the recent transfer window.

Meanwhile, Spurs had an unsuccessful campaign, which Antonio Conte blamed on the club and left them in the middle of the season. Tottenham will need to find a successor for Harry Kane soon, as his time at White Hart Lane appears to be coming to an end as he approaches a move to Bayern Munich.

3. Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Liverpool’s next game against Newcastle United, who placed third in the Premier League in 2022–23, will similarly pit them against a formidable opponent. Following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Jurgen Klopp’s team made changes to their midfield by bringing in Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and they are now currently pursuing Romeo Lavia.

In the transfer window, Newcastle was also quite active and made several fantastic acquisitions to contend for the Champions League the next year. The Magpies will attempt to be content on all fronts.

2. Chelsea vs Liverpool

Chelsea and Liverpool face each other in the opening weekend

The 2023-24 season’s opening game week will see Liverpool travel to Chelsea, according to the recently announced schedule.

After being named the next Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino will make his return to English football in the highly anticipated match.

The match will take place on Sunday, August 13, two days after Manchester City, the defending champions, play Burnley on the road to open the new campaign. Vincent Kompany, who is now the head coach of Burnley, will greet his former team at Turf Moor for this match.

1. Arsenal vs Manchester City

The one-off contest, which serves as the season’s opening match, traditionally features the Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners.

Arsenal have been chosen as the opposition to meet Pep Guardiola’s team, despite the fact that Manchester City won both titles last season, making them just the second English club ever to complete the treble.

In order to end the league season five points ahead of Mikel Arteta’s team, City attracted longtime league leaders Arsenal. Only Manchester United (21) and Liverpool (16 wins each in the Community Shield) have an improved or similar record.
