Germany finished third in Group H

For the first time ever, Germany are out of the Women’s World Cup before the knockout rounds after failing to score the crucial winning goal against South Korea.

Germany were frustrated by South Korea’s efficient and well-coordinated effort despite scoring first.

The fact that the two-time winners and the second-ranked squad in the world are leaving the competition is unquestionably the most shocking development thus far.

Colombia and Morocco, though, advance from Group H. Who might have imagined that following Germany’s 6-0 victory against Morocco two weeks before?

During the Women’s World Cup, no German team has ever missed going past the group stage, but after Morocco defeated Colombia 1-0, history has been created.

Following a 6-0 thrashing of Morocco in its first match, Germany’s performance only deteriorated with a 2-1 loss to Colombia and a tie on Thursday, giving them four points from three contests.

Germany fell behind immediately against South Korea due to a goal by Tottenham midfielder Cho So-hyun. Anissa Lahmari of Morocco netted in the final minutes of the first half giving Morocco an advantage against Colombia.

But Germany’s Alexandra Popp of Germany tied the score in the 42nd minute, although the outcome at that point were expected to see Germany progress.

While manager Martina Voss-Tecklenburg wasn’t able to do enough and failed to get his side the sought the second goal that could have pushed Germany past on the basis of goal difference.

Frustration infiltrated Germany’s players. Colombia were defeated by Morocco 1-0, but both groups progressed to the Round of 16.

Having previously reached the next round of 16 on eight occasions (from the start of the event in 1991 to 2019), this is the first occasion in the team’s entire history that Germany has been unable from doing so.
