Gianluigi Buffon ends a 28-year legacy that included winning the World Cup in 2006, 10 Serie A championships with Juventus, and a Ligue 1 crown with Paris St. Germain.

Buffon ended his playing days at Parma, a Serie B team, where he began in 1995.

Gianluigi Buffon made 19 appearances this past season despite his injury problems; his contract with Parma was set to expire in 2024.

He started his career at Parma Youth before making his Serie A debut for the team in November 1995. In 2001, he signed for Juventus in a £32.6 million transfer, which was then a world record for a goalkeeper.

Barring a short stay at PSG in 2018–19, Gianluigi Buffon spent the majority of his professional life in Turin. He earned an unparalleled 657 appearances in the Italian Premier Division overall, and his 176 appearances for Italy make him the all-time leading custodian in terms of caps.

After Italy missed out on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Gianluigi Buffon announced his retirement from international football that year.

His greatest professional achievement was winning the World Cup when Italy defeated France 5-3 in a penalty shootout in Berlin following a 1-1 draw.

Gianluigi Buffon made his Serie A debut with Parma in 1995, marking the start of his professional career. As one of the more intriguing rookie goalkeepers in Italy, he quickly made his way into the starting eleven and contributed to Parma’s 1999 Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup, and Supercoppa Italiana victories.

Gianluigi Buffon became one of the top goalkeepers in the world after signing with Juventus in 2001 for the then-record sum of €52 million for a goalkeeper. During the first two seasons he spent at the club, Buffon won the Serie A championship.

He achieved an all-time high of nine Serie A championships, four Coppa Italias, and five Supercoppa Italiana during his first stint at Juventus. 

In addition to being elected Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year an astounding twelve times, he also became the first goalie to receive the Serie A Footballer of the Year title.

Pelé included Buffon in the FIFA 100 ranking of the top 100 active players in worldwide football in 2004. He is the sole goalie to have won the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year title, which he did in 2003 after helping his team advance to the UEFA Champions League Final.

He additionally took home that year’s UEFA Top Goalkeeper title and was selected five times for the UEFA Team of the Year. Buffon cut three times in the FIFPro World 11 and finished as the 2006 Ballon d’Or runner-up.

He was also the primary goalkeeper to ever receive the Golden Foot Award and, in addition to Iker Casillas and Manuel Neuer, received the title of the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper an astonishing five times. He was also chosen as the best goalkeeper of the 21st century, of the previous 25 years, and of the preceding ten by the same structure.
