The former Manchester United captain is currently an outcast at Old Trafford.

Harry Maguire’s career trajectory has not gone the way one would’ve expected when he switched from Leicester City to Manchester United In 2019. His transfer cost Manchester United a record €80m in transfer fees, making him the most expensive defender in Premier League history at the time.

The start of his spell at Old Trafford did indicate a favourable time in the coming future. However, a turbulent season for The Red Devils and successive management changes saw his career quickly take a turn for the unexpected. Maguire was caught off guard several times in matches, a lot of his avoidable mistakes started to cost United goals at crucial junctures. There was also news of him losing his authority within the United dressing room.

One thing let to another and the start of manager Erik ten Hag’s tenure saw him going down the pecking order. Defenders Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez have been given preference over the €80m transfer by Erik Ten Hag. Needless to say, Maguire has not featured for United up until now this season, is not expected to feature for United in the future, and is expected to transfer out of Old Trafford. Ten Hag has made sure that he has communicated his desires about Maguire to him by stripping him of his captaincy.

Finding another club has not been easy for him, with his transfer to West Ham falling through at the last moment twice.

However, one place where Maguire has not lost his favours is the England national side. His performances for the national side have been very different to those for Manchester United, he has been very consistent and has shown more confidence while playing for the three lions. National team manager Gareth Southgate has always been a public supporter of Maguire’s abilities and has reposed faith in him despite his lapses at Old Trafford.

His confidence in the defender is high enough that it is being speculated that Maguire may retain his place in the squad for the upcoming internationals against Ukraine and Scotland.
