Kylian Mbappe back in contact with PSG over contract extension possibility

PSG do not want the striker to leave for free

The Kylian Mbappe-PSG transfer saga has developed a new angle as it is being reported by journalist Andres Onrubia Ramos that after weeks of giving each other the cold shoulder, Kylian Mbappe and PSG are back in contact and that a contract extension is atop the discussion table.

The story so far is that Kylian Mbappe’s contract at the Parc de Princes runs out next summer. Mbappe has stated that he will honour his full contract by staying at PSG for one more year, after which it is widely believed he will join his boyhood club Real Madrid.

On the other hand, PSG do not want Mbappe to run out his contract, because if so happens, PSG will not be able to sell him and he will leave on a free transfer, something PSG really want to avoid. The Parisians have repeatedly stated that they do not want to lose the best player in the world for free and expect to recoup some of the €180m they spent on him in 2017.

PSG presented Kylian Mbappe with two offers, either sign a contract extension, or leave the club this summer, so that PSG can make a profit on his exit. Mbappe so far has refused to do both, leading the club to take steps like excluding him from the pre-season tour, making him train with the players listed for exits, and exclude him from PSG’s Ligue 1 campaign.

Kylian Mbappe left out of PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against FC Lorient

True to their words, Mbappe did not feature in PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against FC Lorient.  PSG have informed Mbappe that if he decides to leave next year on a free transfer, he will not feature in PSG’s campaign this season. PSG have also stated that they believe Mbappe already has agreed on personal terms with Real Madrid for 2024.

With all these tactics, PSG hope that they can create enough fan pressure to change his mind about leaving for free, or sign a contract extension.

PSG giving the cold shoulder to Kylian Mbappe seems to have created a breakthrough as both sides are in talks once again with the possibility of a contract extension rife.

As far as Mbappe is concerned, sources close to the player have suggested that he feels betrayed by the club as when he signed a contract extension in 2022, he was promised by the club that they would sign more quality players like Bernardo Silva and Robert Lewandowski, something which did not materialise.
