Liverpool beat Chelsea to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton for British record-fee £110m

Liverpool have succeeded in acquiring Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo’s signature for a record-breaking transfer fee of £110m. This makes the Ecuadorian the most expensive Liverpool player ever, a title previously held by Virgil Van Dijk when he joined Liverpool from Southampton for a fee of £75m in 2017. He is also the most expensive transfer in British history, beating Argentine Enzo Fernandez’s transfer from Benfica to Chelsea last season, which costed The Blues £106m.
Liverpool’s record-breaking bid brings an end to weeks long speculation about where the 21-year-old defensive midfielder was headed next. After impressing last season with Brighton, a lot of Premier League giants had their eyes on the defensive midfielder.
Arsenal registered their interest in him, reports have suggested that the Gunners bid up to £70m for him. Apart from Arsenal, Chelsea pursued him very diligently up until Liverpool managed to snag him.

It is reported that Brighton had set up an auction style deadline expiring on Thursday night, after which they would sell him to the highest bidder. A practical bidding war ensued between Chelsea and Liverpool in which Chelsea went as high as £100m, however Liverpool managed to outbid them by £10m, snaping him up for the British record transfer fee.
Both Liverpool and Chelsea have been trying to rebuild their thinning midfield. Chelsea’s midfield was hit when big names like Mason Mount, Ngolo Kante and Kai Havertz left. While Liverpool’s midfield was hit by the departure of names like Jordan Henderson, Fabiniho, and Roberto Firmino. Both teams have been on a crusade to fix their midfield since the transfer window began.
Liverpool have now completed a trifecta of dynamic midfield signings in the transfer window, they made headlines when they managed to acquire World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister for £35m from Brighton, they then acquired Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig for £70m.
