Manchester United hold talks with Benfica over Joao Neves' potential transfer in 2024
The 18-year-old has been touted as the next ‘Bruno Fernandes’
It is being reported that Manchester United are in serious talks with Benfica over 18-year-old Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves. Neves made 21 senior appearances for Benfica in the League-winning run in Portugal.
The teenager became an important part of Benfica in the later stages of the League and was impressed by his blocking, defending, passing, and eye for goal.
It is being reported that Manchester United and Chelsea are expected to battle each other for the teen’s signature. However, it is believed that Chelsea might not succeed as the last time both sides did business it was for Enzo Fernandez’s move from Benfica to Chelsea, Various misunderstandings in the transactions have left a sour taste in both the club’s understanding of each other.
Manchester United’s interest in him comes at a time when manager Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign a new midfielder. He has reported interest in Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amarabat and Ajax’s Ryan Gravenberch. Manchester United’s performances in their first few games of the season may have prompted his anxiety, while injuries to Mason Mount and Kobiee Mainoo have surely exaggerated his concerns.

On the other hand, Neves is only 18 and is looked upon as someone who can be acquired for a relatively low price and can serve at Old Trafford for long.
However, it is being reported that the deal is not something that can materialise in this transfer window and that he might not be seen in a red shirt up until next year’s summer.
Benfica might not let him go as they prepare for their upcoming Champions League campaign as Neves is now an important member of the side and with the transfer window hours away from closing, they don’t have any replacements lined up.
However, if Benfica exits the Champions League early, a move in January might be possible.
