United have identified the Benfica gk as Andre Onana’s back-up

Odysseas Vlachodimos is an intriguing possibility for Manchester United, although the team may have to fork out $51 million to bring him to Old Trafford.

Should Dean Henderson, 26 years old, decide to depart the club after the transfer deadline, Manchester United’s decision to sign Benfica custodian Odysseas Vlachodimos has surfaced as a backup plan.

Crystal Palace have joined the battle to recruit Henderson, who is expected to return to Nottingham Forest after a successful loan season last year, potentially igniting an auction.

While leaving him could benefit the Red Devils, who currently face Financial Fair Play concerns, it would additionally create a void in their goalie lineup, as new No. 1 Andre Onana would be lacking a certain challenger and third-choice shot-stopper Tom Heaton will be out recuperating. But Ten Hag and company already have a substitute in mind: Vlachodimos, an international for Greece.

According to rumours from Italy, they are aggressively looking into a transfer for the 29-year-old, who has stated that he is “ready to move on.” This summer, Vlachodimos stated in a conversation with the Greek daily Sport24: “I want it immediately.

Notwithstanding the fact that Vlachodimos was benched by Benfica manager Roger Schmidt after his subpar performance in their recent 3-2 loss to Boavista, the Portuguese titans still place considerable importance on him—at least financially.

A Bola alleges that Benfica cleverly included a handsome €60 million (£51 million) release provision into Vlachodimos’ contract when rewarded him with a new agreement until 2027 just five months earlier.

Samuel Soares, a teenage hotshot who has made just two senior appearances, is presently Boss Schmidt’s preferred custodian, and he recorded a clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 comeback triumph over Estrela da Amadora.

“After Monday [against Boavista], it was clear to me that I wanted new energy in the custodian position,” the German coach said.
