Premier League 2023-24: Team of the Week for GW 1
The English top flight has started on a high note with every matchday having some goals
Premier League has kicked off in style and we can expect a lot of great action coming up in recent weeks. Matchday 1 had everything including goals, saves, and thriller matches. The opening weekend of the 2023-24 Premier League season was an exhilarating one as every game had goals and just four out of the 20 teams failed to score.
There was a lot of entertaining football during game week one of the 2023-24 season of the Premier League. Among the results, Manchester City’s convincing win over Kompany’s Burnley and Newcastle’s domination against Aston Villa was notable.
Here is a look at the team for game week one of the 2023-24 Premier League:
Goalkeeper- Bernd Leno
In a tight game against Everton, Fulham came out on top and one of the reasons for the win was the German goalkeeper. Bernd Leno kept Fulham in game throughout the match and kept a clean sheet in 1-0 victory against Everton. He was the main difference as he kept Fulham in the match.
Left-back- Pervis Estupinan
The Ecuadorian continued his strong start to the season for Brighton just like last season. The full-back was instrumental in the win against newly promoted Luton Town. He made a statement in the 4-1 win, he was vital in defense, when Luton were trying to push on the left flank, he was the one stopping the attacks from that side.
Centre-back- Craig Dawson
The Wolves defender was able to hold the lightning fast attack of Manchester United in their first match yesterday. Dawson held the Wolves defense together as they eliminated United from scoring goals, even though their efforts to stop them, Wolves conceded just one goal against the newly shaped Manchester United.
Centre-back- Joachim Andersen
The Crystal Palace defender started from where he left, he is the main defensive head of the team for the last season or two since his arrival. Crystal Palace beat Sheffield United 1-0 in their opening match. The last time Palace recorded that high possession total in the Premier League was against Watford in a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.
Right-back- Aaron Wan Bissaka
Aaron Wan Bissaka like every match was exceptional in defense as he stopped the fast attack of new look Wolves. Bissaka has added a new dimension to his game which is the ability to deliver pin point cross in the first match. It will depend on if he can maintain that place in ETH’s side but his contribution in defense, timely tackles helped Manchester United win the first match 1-0.

Centre-midfield- Rodri
Rodri put up a 10/10 performance against Burnley, this kind of performance is expected from him every match that he plays. After De Bruyne’s injury he took control of the midfield with Kovacic and ended up winning their first match in the Premier League. A regular threat in attack and countless defensive interventions to make sure his team got the result.
Centre-midfield- Pascal Groß
Pascal was close to his first goal when he drilled a clever effort against the near post, he had a high quality performance as he kept Brighton and Hove Albion ticking in the midfield and commanded his players. The 32-year-old proves yet again that age is just a number. He won six ground duels in the match against Luton Town.
Centre-midfield- Matheus Nunes
The 24-year-old had a brilliant game for Wolves against Manchester United, he was breaking up the defenses and making runs, causing problems for world-class defenders like Varane and Martinez. The Portuguese International showed his worth irrespective of the loss that his club suffered, he was very positive in the match. His performance has Liverpool thinking about signing him after failing to sign Caicedo and Lavia.
Left-wing- Bukayo Saka
Saka had a season to remember last campaign, the England international started from where he left last season. There’s no doubt he has put in some work in the gym and scored an out of the box goal against Nottingham Forest in a 2-1 for Arsenal. His strike has clearly stated that he might have the second sweetest left foot in the world after Messi.
Striker- Erling Haaland
Haaland got on to the score sheet in the 4th minute of the match, he just can’t stop scoring. Manchester City striker has shown no signs of slowing down, as he kicked off the new Premier League season with a brace against newly-promoted Burnley. City might win the Premier League if he keeps on scoring goals for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Right-wing- Jarrod Bowen
Bowen carried the ball well for West Ham, riding challenges and dragging them up the pitch. But his most remarkable contribution to the game was the stupendous curling effort which put the Irons ahead. Their lead was cut down in the 82nd minute, thanks to Solanke’s strike which helped Bournemouth secure a point in the 1-1 draw against Hammers.
