Harry Kane has left Spurs and joined Bayern Munich

The 2022-2023 Premier League season was marred by internal turmoil, managerial failures, and spineless performances for Spurs. Missing out on European football entirely next season, and undergoing a process of reformation with the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to learn from the mistakes of seasons past and reassert themselves as a Premier League force next term.

Here’s how Tottenham could lineup for the 2023-24 season:

Goalkeeper- Guglielmo Vicario

Under new gaffer, Ange Postecoglou, the Aussie revolution is firmly underway, and with that comes the dawn of a new ‘keeper in the form of Guglielmo Vicario. On 17 September 2022, Vicario received his first Italy national football team call-up, as manager Roberto Mancini named him to be part of the squad for the UEFA Nations League games against England and Hungary, the former Empoli star and Italian international made the most saves in Serie A during the 2021-22 season. He will be a perfect fit for Ange’s style of play.

Right-Back- Pedro Porro

Pedro Porro
Pedro Porro joined Tottenham last January

Porro had a mixed campaign following his arrival in January. Defensively, he showed that he has plenty of room for work, however, going forward, he demonstrated exactly why Spurs shelled out a lot of money to get him. His presence on the right side will be crucial because Ange likes to have attacking fullbacks and he will very much fulfil that role. Porro first appeared with the Spain under-21s in 2019, aged 19.

He made his senior international debut in 2021 and was included in the squad for the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals in Italy, in which Spain finished as runner-up.

Centre-Back- Cristian Romero

The Argentine World Cup winner has simultaneously experienced the highs and lows of football in no more than six months. Starting in the World Cup Final in Qatar, Romero certainly didn’t enjoy a happy return to Spurs, after the club failed to qualify for Europe and gradually slipped down the table. That said, at 25 the burly central defender is an irrepressible physical presence at the back and is never afraid to put in a challenge. He could well be key to Spurs’ progression under Postecoglou.

Centre-Back- Micky van de Ven

Micky van de Ven is the physical prototype of a modern-day centre-back. At 1,93m he has a stature comparable to most central defenders in Europe’s elite outfits, while his acceleration and top speed are nothing short of exceptional for a player in his position, and with his frame.

In possession, Micky van de Ven does not seek 1v1 duels, but when he has space to attack he is willing and capable, of carrying possession forward with tremendous speed. The combination of his strong physical frame, long strides, and elite pace, make van de Ven an incredibly hard player to dispossess when he gets into full stride and has open space to exploit. Micky van de Ven’s key strength is his ability to delay opposition attacks with expert defensive angles, natural recovery speed, and smart, well-timed tackling. His partnership with Romero will be very crucial for Spurs in defence.

Left-Back- Sergio Reguilon

Reguilon provides great attacking threats and creativity. Additionally, his crossing is exceptionally accurate. Reguilon also excels with his dribbling ability. With no clear weaknesses going forward, Reguilon has all the abilities of an exciting, modern-day attacking fullback.

An aggressive defender, Reguilon excels at pressing and defending higher up the pitch. Despite occasionally getting caught out, his proactive style allows him to pin the opposition’s winger back and make the most of transitions by covering ground quickly with his pace. Reguilón made his senior international debut on September 2020, starting in Spain’s 4–0 win over Ukraine for the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League.

Central Midfielder- Yves Bissouma

Yves Bissouma’s debut season in the centre of the park for Tottenham didn’t go entirely to plan with a combination of below-par performances and a fractured ankle which kept him out for five months. With a whole pre-season under his belt and a fresh bill of health, the Mali international could well be like a new signing next term, and could certainly add that defensive fortification that Tottenham was so desperate for last season. He has made 28 appearances for Mali national team.

Central Midfielder- Rodrigo Bentancur

A dynamic, hard-working, skilful, elegant, and tactically versatile midfielder, who is comfortable using either foot, Bentancur has been described as a tall and “physically strong” player, who is capable of playing in any midfield position, including as a defensive midfielder, as a central midfielder, as a winger on either flank, in a box-to-box role, or even as a mezzala, or as an attacking midfielder behind the forwards, due to his ability to make attacking runs from behind.

His height and strong frame also enable him to act as a “target man” in an advanced midfield role. Although his acceleration is not particularly impressive, he is also a mobile player, who is capable of pressing opponents further up the pitch. He is perfectly fit for Ange’s style of play.

Central Attacking Midfielder- James Maddison

He can be a huge attacking threat for opponents in Ange’s system. Opponents find Maddison difficult to defend against because, while he tends to operate in front of their midfield, he is always looking to play a dangerous pass. Opponents know that they can’t drop too far off of Maddison because he provides a threat on goal from a distance, and can punish them. Maddison was capped by England at the under-21 level from 2017 to 2019 and made his debut for the senior team in 2019. He was part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

Right-Wing- Dejan Kulusevski

Another product of Atalanta’s youth system, Dejan Kulusevski was signed by Spurs on an 18-month loan deal with a view to buying thereafter. Now, he had signed permanently for Spurs. He is another player who must step up big-time this season. The Swedish Winger was one of the most exciting players at Spurs heading into the new season, however, he turned out to be massively underwhelming instead. He can be a big player for Spurs this season.

Left-Wing- Heung-min Son

Son Heung-Min’s 2022-2023 season encapsulated the sentiments of Spurs’ season in general, disappointing, off-the-boil, and underperforming. Son is known for his two-footed ability, explosive pace, positional sense, movement, close control and clinical finishing which make him especially effective on the counter-attack. But, it will be a big task for Ange to help Son get back on track.

Striker- Richarlison

Richarlison
The Brazilian will be playing as the striker with Kane’s departure

Richarlison is a rare breed of attacker in the sense that he is able to play in multiple positions in the attack at an alarmingly good level. He also has an incredibly valuable trait in that he is capable of playing on either foot. This makes him a huge threat as it eliminates a weakness that most defenders target against attackers. Perhaps Richarlison’s greatest attribute is his defensive work.

He epitomises what is required from a modern-day forward and his output on the defensive end is a crucial part. Even though he is very much criticised for his attitude and his past season performances. Ange will have to play a huge role to play for his consistency this season as he will be crucial after the departure of Harry Kane.
