OWEN COYLE ISL 2023-24 NORTHEAST UNITED VS CHENNAIYIN FC

Owen Coyle spoke about Chennaiyin FC not converting the chances in front of goal.

Chennaiyin FC suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of NorthEast United in their latest Indian Super League 2023-24 fixture at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Friday. It was a second successive defeat for the Marina Machans as the new era under Owen Coyle got off to a rocky start.

The tactician spoke to the media in the post-match interaction and rued his side’s clinical ability in front of goal. He talked about creating enough chances to win the game but failing to capitalise on the opportunities came back to haunt them.

Here are the excerpts from the conversation:

Chennaiyin FC will bounce back

Owen Coyle spoke about not capitalising on the chances and getting punished for it during his analysis of the game. He said, “Certainly in the first half, we should have been in front by a couple of goals but we never took our chances and when you don’t, you get punished heavily. The goalkeeper got injured at the end as well. Of course, it was always going to be a tough start but the league is decided after 22 games and not two. So we will pick ourselves up, get stronger and look to bounce back.”

Foreigners not to be blamed

Upon being asked if he was disappointed with the performance of his foreign players in particular, Owen Coyle was quick to jump to their defence. He said, “In truth, you have always got to give balance to it and be fair. We can’t just blame the foreigners, it is such a poor thing to say. We are all disappointed in terms of the result.”

Team will get stronger

Owen Coyle expects his team to become stronger as the ISL progresses. He feels that Chennaiyin FC did enough to win the game and the signs are promising as the players become match-fit.

He was quoted as saying, “There is no doubt that we are going to get stronger as a team. Lazar (Cirkovic) has just come in, and Ryan Edwards has just come in. When those two big lads are big and healthy, then of course, they will complement all the foreigners. Jordan Murray missed out tonight and we are obviously affected by that, but we still did enough in that game to lead by 2-3 goals in the first half.”
