The Subroto Cup 2023 Sub Junior Boys (U14) tournament starts from the 1st of October.
The 62nd edition of the esteemed Subroto Cup is up and running, and we already have the winner of the Junior Girls (U-17) football tournament, which is St. Patrick’s Gumla, Jharkhand.
The setting of the new month however, will dawn the start to another chapter of exciting football, as it's now time for the Sub Junior Boys (U-14) to play their stride.
Initially, the tournament was exclusively for Boys U-17, but it expanded to include Boys U-14 in 1998, at the request of the School Games Federation of India.
Since then, the competition has added to the prestige of the Subroto Cup, and remains to be an integral cog in the youth and grassroot development of Indian football.
With that said, let us dive into some of the key details of this year's Subroto Cup 2023 Junior Boys (U14).

Format
Competition format
The teams have been divided into eight different pools, from whereon they play against every other group opponent in a round robin format. Once all group games are over, the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages.
In the knockout stages, the teams will compete in one off games. The winner of the round of 16 games will make it to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final match.
The teams will be ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), and if tied on points, the following tiebreaking criteria will be applied, in the order given, to determine the rankings:
- Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
- If more than two teams were tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
- Goal difference in all group matches;
- Goals scored in all group matches;
- Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they are playing each other in the last round of the group;
- Disciplinary points (yellow card = −1 point, red card as a result of two yellow cards = −3 points, direct red card = −3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = −4 points);
- Drawing of lots.
Game format
Each game will be of a total time of 50 minutes, with 25 teams stipulated for either halves. A 10 minute break will also be given at the end of the first half.
In the knockout games, if the scores are level at the end of normal time, then a 14-minute extra-time, consisting of two halves of seven minutes each, will be played. If no verdict prevails at the end of extra-time, the game will be decided on penalties.
Also, a maximum of five substitutions are allowed to be made.
Telecast
Matches will be telecasted on the SportsCast YouTube channel.
