The Mariners have added a few big names to their squad.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the coveted Indian Super League (ISL) trophy in the 2022-23 season. The club followed it up with Durand Cup success, beating arch-rivals East Bengal in a jampacked Kolkata Derby final.

A surprise change in management saw Juan Ferrando axed and the return of club favourite Antonio Lopez Habas. Habas, however, built on his predecessor’s foundation at the club and oversaw the club’s acquisition of its first-ever ISL League Winner’s Shield.

The Mariners and Mumbai City were locked in a points stalemate but the former’s victory over the latter on the final matchday saw them cross the finish line. The Islanders, however, exacted revenge by inflicting a 3-1 loss upon the Kolkata side in the ISL 2023-24 Final.

The League Winners’ Shield and ISL trophy exchanged cities but Mohun Bagan Super Giant are hungry for more. Additions of class players in Greg Stewart, and Apuia as well as marquee foreign signings like Jamie Maclaren is already a statement of intent by the Green and Maroons. Here are all the transfers completed by Mohun Bagan so far in the 2024-25 summer window:

Incomings

Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia)

Apuia has slowly matured into an adventurous box-to-box midfielder from the cautious number six role under the able tutelage of Des Buckingham. Petr Kratky’s faith in him helped him transform completely and has encouraged him to don the Mariners’ colours this season to shoulder more responsibility at the heart of midfield.

Greg Stewart

The twinkle-toed Scotsman has followed Hugo Boumous’ career trajectory once more as he has switched to the Eastern side in one of the biggest transfers of the ISL’s summer transfer window. Additionally, Greg Stewart will be a valuable mentor to his fellow understudies in Thapa and Sahal, imparting his knowledge of ball control in tight spaces and shooting finesse.

Tom Aldred

Bolton-born center-half Tom Aldred brings a wealth of experience and solidity to the Mariners’ defensive ranks. The centre-back has over 100 appearances for Brisbane Roar with stints at Carlisle United and Blackpool as well. Towering at 6 ft 2 ins and sporting a vigilant demeanor, Aldred will be a menacing sight for the best of attackers in the league.

Alberto Rodriguez

The Mariners have also recruited another Spanish defender adept at marking opponents in wide spaces and dominating set-pieces. Alberto Rodriguez has an impressive portfolio (Laliga2, Indonesian Liga 1) and his inclusion will be crucial to deal with the more unpredictable opponents.

Jamie Maclaren

Mohun Bagan Super Giant didn’t stop at anything to snap up the A-League’s all-time topscorer and 5-time Golden Boot winner. Jamie Maclaren is touted to be an invaluable asset for the Mariners amidst the departure of another prolific forward in Armando Sadiku. The forward has an arsenal at his disposal to complement the eagle-eyed vision of Stewart and the rapid pace of wingers like Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh.

Dheeraj Singh

With Arshdeep Singh rising through the ranks, the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cupper returned to the Mariners. Dheeraj Singh’s time at FC Goa has been fruitful and matured him into a reliable shot-stopper. The goalkeeper could help provide some much-needed respite to Vishal Kaith and is a solid rotation option for Jose Molina.

Saurabh Bhanwala

The Indian national football team aspirant was signed by promising I-League candidate Namdhari FC. Saurabh Bhanwala was voted to have performed the best defensive action of the league by the fans last season and will hope to replicate his outstanding performances for the Mariners.

Outgoings

Armando Sadiku

Sadiku’s departure may have saddened fans given how the Albanian Euro 2016 hero stole hearts with his predatory instincts. During his time at the club he helped them to the League Winners’ Shield and the Durand Cup. However, his move to FC Goa is an equally exciting opportunity for the Gaurs’ fans to whom he will surely be a treat to the eyes.

Hector Yuste

Hector Yuste was a flash hit during his time as a Mariner. The Spanish defender was a raggamuffin who wasn’t afraid to pull out dirty tricks just to stop the opposition from progressing but will use the same for arch-rivals East Bengal this season.

Brendan Hamill

Hamill rejoined Melbourne Victory after plying his trade for Mohun Bagan Super Giant but the Mariners’ faithful would remember him gladly for his composed style of play.

Hugo Boumous

Putting speculations of a rift to bed, Hugo Boumous moved to Odisha FC. The flashy midfielder reunited with former teammates Ahmed Jahouh, Amey Ranawade, Mourtada Fall and Amrinder Singh alongside manager Sergio Lobera.

Joni Kauko

Joni Kauko was a fan favourite and after spending a fruitful three years at the club, was released as a free agent. The Finnish livewire scored and assisted some brilliant goals and fans will fondly reminisce about his time as a Mariner.

Anwar Ali

Mohun Bagan had signed the solid, ball-playing, attack-minded centre-back on loan from Delhi FC and he helped them win the ISL League Winners Shield 2023-24. However, it ended sourly for Ali since he didn’t get the No-Objection Certificate(NOC) on time from the club, and terminated his contract leading to a contract dispute that involved taking his former side, parent club, and future side to court as per the AIFF Players’ Status Department’s investigation. Eventually, the court granted his appeal to join the archrivals East Bengal.

Lalrinliana Hnamte

After featuring scarcely for Mohun Bagan Super Giant and scoring one goal, Lalrinliana Hnamte moved to Chennaiyin FC in search of greener pastures.

Kiyan Nassiri

Promising youngster and Kolkata Derby hattrick scorer Kiyan also joined former teammate Hnamte at Chennaiyin FC. The striker will be looking to start more often and sharpen his eye for goal.
