Sevilla terminate Papu Gomez’s contract on mutual agreement
The Argentine winger joined Sevilla in 2021
As per reports, LaLiga side Sevilla and Papu Gomez have reached an agreement in which they have mutually decided to terminate the contract earlier than scheduled. The 35-year-old winger joined Sevilla in 2021 and his contract tied him to the club till before the summer of 2024.
However, both the team and the player have mutually decided to part ways, and with Gomez turning 35 and contacts with no new clubs being reported, it is likely that he might move to a less competitive league.
However, some are reporting he might move back to Serie A club Atalanta, where he had the best spell of his career. Gomez moved to Spain after six years with Atalanta where he had the best spell of his career, topping the assists chart on multiple occasions.
However, his move to Spain has been far less glamourous, he found it difficult to fit in and has featured in just four games for Sevilla this year. He is very down the pecking order at the club to start games, and his age of 35 years old doesn’t help his cause.
The highest point in his career has been winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022. He featured in two games in the tournament and was ruled out before the business end of the tournament due to an ankle injury.
This same ankle injury kept him out of action in the months following the World Cup, leading him to miss out on more than a handful of Sevilla games.
It is not clear whether Atalanta will take him back, given his age and injury proneness, his return might be hanging in the balance.
