I-League 2023-24: Fixtures, format, telecast and more

The I-League starts on the 28th of October.

The 2023-24 I-League season, will be the 17th edition of one of India's premier footballing competitions.

The competition has undergone a number of changes, with the new season seeing an increase in the number of teams, with four new entrants making their way into the I-League. 

The league’s logo has also been changed, and has been given a new refurbished look.

With the inaugural setting of the new season set to take place on the 28th of October at 2 PM IST, we have compiled a list of all the things that you need to know ahead of the start of the league.

Format

The format of the I-League is going to be the same as last season. Every team in the league is going to compete against every other team twice throughout the season in a home and away format. Once all teams have played their 24 league stage fixtures, the team at the top of the table will be declared as the Champions of the 2023-24 I-League, and will be promoted to the Indian Super League.

On the other hand, the bottom two teams will be relegated into the third division (Second Division League).

The teams will be ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), and if tied on points, the following tiebreaking criteria will be applied, in the order given, to determine the rankings:

1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
4. If more than two teams were tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
5. Goal difference in all group matches;
6. Goals scored in all group matches;
7. Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they are playing each other in the last round of the group;
8. Disciplinary points (yellow card = −1 point, red card as a result of two yellow cards = −3 points, direct red card = −3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = −4 points);
9. Drawing of lots.

The 2023-24 season of the I-League will be broadcast on Eurosport TV Channel. FanCode will livestream the games. Also, Indian Football YouTube channel will stream the fixtures.
