Our priority is to rectify defensive errors, states Punjab FC head coach Staikos Vergetis
Punjab FC have lost both the games they played in ISL so far
The last game of the second week of the 2023-24 ISL season saw FC Goa open their campaign with a win over newly promoted Punjab FC. The Gaurs secured a tight 1-0 win over their Northern counterparts.
Punjab FC had a few and fair chances to make a comeback into the game but just couldn’t make the most out of it. It hasn’t been an ideal start to their ISL journey as they have now lost two games on the trot.
After the game, Punjab FC’s head coach Staikos Vergetis addressed the media.
Team’s performance
The head coach shared his thoughts on his team’s performance and said that his side did not perform well defensively, but his players tried until the last minute to score a goal in order to secure a point.
“In the first half, especially in the first 20 minutes we were not good defensively. We allowed them to create chances and score. And generally we weren’t good in our defensive tasks. The last 15 minutes of the first half and in the beginning of the second half we were more dangerous. We tried until the last second to score one goal to secure one point,” he asserted.
Thoughts on last 10 minutes
Sharing his thoughts on the last 10 minutes of the game, the head coach said, “The last 10 minutes it was a very fast game. Both teams had chances to create opportunities for goals. Goa could’ve also scored a second goal because there was a lot of space and the ball was travelling very fast. I think it was a very enjoyable game for the spectators,”
Mistakes
The Greek manager also opened up about his side’s mistakes from today’s game that he’lkl like to rectify in the times to come. He said, “We have to rectify our defensive errors, that’s our priority. I’m not happy. Today we didn’t perform well. But, offensively we created more chances and stepped in the opponent area more times,”
Possibility of playing Wilmar-Majcen together
The head coach was also asked about the possibility of playing Wilmar Jordan and Luka Majcen together upfront. He said that it is something that he plans to do very soon, but hasn’t prepared for it in training.
“It is something that exists in our mind, but until now we haven’t prepared for it. Jordan came late and therefore we haven’t tried it in training. But, it is on our mind,” he signed off.
