A solitary goal was enough to hand Pakistan the win over Cambodia.

Pakistan registered their first-ever Asian qualifiers win, beating Cambodia 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 match at the Jinnah Stadium on Tuesday.

Progression meant that Pakistan will be part of Group G that will also feature Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Tajikistan in Round 2.

Pakistan returned to the Jinnah Stadium to play their first home match after an eight-year absence. After drawing the first leg 0-0, the game was finely poised ahead of a historic match in Islamabad.

The visitors almost ruined the homecoming in the opening five minutes. However, Cambodia’s Chanteaka missed a glorious opportunity from six-yards out. A cross into the box found him with plenty of space but he was unable to steer the ball home.

Cambodia continued to work the ball well down the left hand side, looking comfortable in possession. Pakistan had to stand firm, calling on captain and goalkeeper Yousuf Butt to keep the score level with key saves.

Chances were few and far between for the hosts throughout the first half, but despite the visitors' early dominance, no further clearcut opportunities came their way.

Back underway, another huge opportunity fell Cambodia’s way. Orn Chanpolin received the ball on the edge of the box but dragged his effort wide.

The hosts had grown in confidence since the break, forcing Kimhuy into a couple of saves from set pieces. Pakistan continued to pile on the pressure but Cambodia reminded them they were still very much in it on the break.

However, with 68 minutes on the clock, Harun Hamid’s well placed volley from the edge of the box saw Kimhuy beaten and Pakistan take the lead. The home side were able to hold on to their one goal advantage and secure a spot in the next round.
