Newcastle United’s top five goal scorers in Premier League era
Callum Wilson is forcing his way among Newcastle United's goalscoring heroes
The Premier League was formed and began in England in 1992. Although now we see 20 teams participating in the PL games in a season, the first one had 22 teams. Newcastle United wasn't one of the sides as they were still competing in the second tier of English football that season. The Magpies debuted in the 1993-94 Premier League season and finished in a whopping third place after getting promoted just a year earlier.
The club was formed exactly a century before PL was formed, in the year 1892. The Premier League era is often the most talked about for any club that got a chance to participate in England. During these PL days, The Magpies have had a fair share of talented strikers playing football for them. The likes of Alan Shearer to modern-day Alexander Isak. But these are the top five goal scorers in the PL era for Newcastle.
5. Shola Ameobi - 43 PL goals
The Nigerian-born Shola Ameobi used to live near St. James' Park and joined the Newcastle United youth academy to hone his skills in football. In 2000, Newcastle United gave Ameobi a glimpse of first-team action against Chelsea FC. For 14 long years, the 6'3" striker continued to wear the colours of Black and White making 397 appearances along the way.
Ameobi amassed 79 goals during his stay. Also, the striker was a helping hand in the 45 goals his teammates scored. Particularly in the Premier League, the former Nigeria international featured in 295 games. The English first-tier competition saw Ameobi found the net a total of 43 times. The player also had a highly impressive 32 assists.
4. Andy Cole - 43 PL goals
Fans around the globe may have seen Andy Cole wearing the kits of Newcastle United and later Manchester United during his prime old days. But a brief history of the player exists with Arsenal FC. The Gunners handed him a professional contract back in October 1989 after he was a U18 player in their youth ranks. But the downsight was that they failed to notice the talent and Bristol City purchased the forward's services for £500,000 from Arsenal in 1992.
And just a year later The Magpies bagged Cole for a £1,750,000 fee from Bristol. Later he would be sold to Manchester United for £7,000,000 in January 1995. But in just 2 years at St. James' Park, the striker lashed out 43 goals in 58 Premier League appearances.
3. Callum Wilson - 45 PL goals
Callum Wilson has been a stellar signing for the Newcastle United side. After closing his AFC Bournemouth career with 67 goals in 187 appearances, Wilson was signed as a striker for The Magpies first team in September 2020. In just three years, the striking prowess of Wilson has made his way among the greats of the Premier League era for Newcastle.
A brace of goals against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday has taken Wilson above the goal-scoring exploits of Shola Ameobi and Andy Cole's 43 PL goals each. It took Wilson 84 Premier League games under his belt to get to the 45-goal mark for the St. James' Park hosts.
2. Peter Beardsley - 46 PL goals
Born in Hexham, England, Peter Beardsley has scored 46 Premier League goals in total over his two stints at Newcastle United. The player was versatile enough and was often deployed as a midfielder and sometimes a striker. Before the Premier League came about, Beardsley was in the ranks of The Magpies from 1983-87.
Before he returned in 1993, "Little Gem” as called by former England national football team manager Bobby Robson, would play for both Merseyside Derby rival sides - Liverpool and Everton. The second stint ended in 1997. The player made 326 appearances for Newcastle United where he scored 119 goals in all competitions.
1. Alan Shearer - 148 PL goals
Alan Shearer still stands out from the rest of the pack in the number of Premier League goals scored while wearing the Newcastle kit. In the Euro 1996, Shearer performed brilliantly for the England national team. The striker ended up winning the Golden Boot after scoring five goals in five appearances. The player had clubs vying for his signature. Both Manchester United and Newcastle United offered a £15 million world record fee to Blackburn Rovers.
But Shearer decided to go local and join the Magpies. During a decade of stay at St. James' Park, Shearer amassed a total of 148 goals in the Premier League.
