I-League 2023-24: Mohammedan Sporting sign midfielder Juan Carlos Nellar

The Argentine has previously played for Gokulam Kerala & Punjab FC.

Mohammedan Sporting Club is pleased to officially announce the acquisition of midfielder Juan Carlos Nellar for the remainder of the current season.

The Club took it to their official Twitter handle to announce the new development. They wrote, “Welcome to the City of Joy, Juan Carlos Nellar! After clinching the #ILeague trophy last season, the Argentine midfielder will be donning the #BlackAndWhiteBrigade jersey this season!”

Who is Juan Carlos Nellar?

Juan, a 29-year-old Argentine player, commenced his professional journey at Instituto At. Central De Cordoba, a club in the Argentine second division, in 2016. Subsequently, he joined Vanlose IF, a Danish third division club, before venturing into Spanish and Italian football with various clubs.

He primarily functions as a defensive midfielder in the team, serving as a protective barrier for the team’s defense. Positioned ahead of the backline, his main objective is to intercept passes, obstruct shots, and disrupt the opponent’s offensive maneuvers.

Experience on Indian soil

On August 31, 2022, Juan was recruited by Gokulam Kerala FC. He played a crucial role in the team’s accomplishment of successfully defending the I-League title last season.

He subsequently joined RoundGlassPunjab FC in February 2023 and played for the club in the I-League matches, scoring one goal against Sudeva Delhi.

Presence in Mohammedan SC

Mohammedan SC currently holds the second position in the I-League table, boasting a total of sixteen points from their five victories in six matches. Impressively, they have maintained an unbeaten streak throughout this season.

The addition of Juan Carlos Nellar will undoubtedly provide a significant impetus to the Indian club. Their midfield, primarily represented by Indian players such as Samuel Lalmuanpuia, Wahengbam Angousana, and Lalremsanga Fanai, has already benefited from occasional support from Mirjalal Kasimov of Uzbekistan. 

However, with the arrival of Juan, the team will not only gain the advantage of his international playing experience but also benefit from his familiarity with Indian conditions. This valuable combination promises to greatly strengthen their midfield.
