I'm not happy with the performance: Manolo Marquez after defeating Jamshedpur FC

Manolo Marquez wants his team to improve in a lot of areas.
In a thrilling encounter in the ISL 2023-24 season, FC Goa showcased their supremacy in a hard-fought clash against Jamshedpur FC. The Goan side dominated the game, creating numerous scoring opportunities with near misses from Noah Sadaoui and Rowllin Borges.
As the match teetered on the edge, strategic substitutions by coach Manolo Marquez, introducing Udanta Singh and Victor Rodriguez, proved decisive. Their combined efforts led to a crucial goal, securing a 1-0 victory for FC Goa. This triumph propels them back to the summit of the table with 16 points, level with Kerala Blasters, albeit with a game in hand.
Here’s what head coach Manolo Marquez had to say after the match:
Overall performance
FC Goa struggled to find the opening or the lone goal of the match and only got it in the final quarter of the game. Manolo Marquez said, “Obviously the most important is the three points. To win.”
“I am not happy. The performance of the team can be one thousand times better. There are good games, normal games, and bad games. But, if you win these kinds of games, it’s important. But we need to improve in a lot of areas.”
Satisfied with a 1-0 result?
Manolo Marquez’s team had the upper hand throughout the game. But, they found themselves a bit unlucky on several occasions. When asked whether he was satisfied with the scoreline, the Spaniard replied:
“Tactically, Jamshedpur is one of the good teams in the competition, because they play in defence 5-4-1, but when they are in attack, the wing backs are very deep, the two midfielders drop position, the two wingers go inside and during these kind of movements if you are not very focused then it’s very dangerous. We more or less controlled the situation except in the last minutes. But it’s true that in the other side we created very clear chances to kill the game before.”
Good defensive display
FC Goa, though unlucky, were strong in defence, thanks to that man of the match performance by Sandesh Jhingan. Marquez highlighted the defensive performance but expects more from his backline, “Finally when you get the clean-sheet you are happy. But, we need to improve in defence despite the clean-sheet.”
