Punjab FC head coach Staikos Vergetis has reassured his players that favourable results will come if they keep performing like this.

In a captivating encounter in the Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24), Punjab FC recorded a 1-1 draw against Hyderabad FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

The outcome of the match between Punjab FC and Hyderabad FC seemed to be in former’s favour until the final minute of play, when Jonathan Moya of Hyderabad FC managed to secure an equaliser for his side.

Disappointed with the result

In the post-match press conference, Punjab FC boss Staikos Vergetis looked a bit disappointed with the result but hinted about encouraging his players after the draw. He said, “The players are deeply disheartened due to their longing for an initial triumph. We are in close proximity to achieving this goal. However, I have reassured them, if we give our utmost and exert maximum effort in each game, just as we did today, favorable outcomes will inevitably follow.”

Need to stay focused

He also spoke about staying focused throughout the game for a better result. He said, “It is inherent to the sport of football that teams are inclined to press harder when they are fighting to survive or catch up in the score. Conversely, teams that are already ahead tend to adopt a defensive stance in order to maintain their advantage.”

He added, “This mentality often comes naturally to the players. It is not a matter of losing concentration in the final minutes or any other external factors. Rather, it is the result of the opponent’s increased effort and determination.

“While it is possible for us to have some difficulties towards the end of the game, such as playing poorly or attempting to delay the game, it is not solely attributed to the last minutes. Our main focus should be on executing our game plan and remaining committed to our responsibilities. By doing so, we can strive for better outcomes,” he concluded.
