Barcelona & Real Madrid Presidents resign from Spanish FA board
This move aims to maintain a neutral stance and allow a fair electoral process
Before an election for president, Joan Laporta of Barcelona and Florentino Perez of Real Madrid have quit from their posts on the governing body of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF).
After Luis Rubiales resigned in September, the RFEF is now being operated by a board of directors under the direction of temporary president Pedro Rocha.
When pressure mounted for kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips sans permission after Spain’s Women’s World Cup final victory over England in August, Rubiales fired.
Since then, FIFA has suspended the 46-year-old for three years, and he is still being looked at by Spanish authorities. He maintains his innocence.
The RFEF’s elections for president are expected to take place around the beginning of 2024, though an exact time has not yet been set.

‘I believe that the legal services of Real Madrid and Barcelona have advised their presidents to resign from their positions when they received my burofax,’ Galan told El Confidencial.
‘In which I warned them that not calling elections for the presidency of the RFEF, thus failing to comply with its statutes, could lead to a possible crime of administrative prevarication.
‘In this way, I have free rein to file a criminal complaint for this alleged crime against Pedro Rocha and the 26 members of his management committee.’
Laporta and Perez have tendered their departures from the board of directors committee, as El Confidencial revealed.
The two largest clubs in Spain sent letters announcing their decision to resign, saying they did so in order to “not interfere in the process of elections.”
Miguel Angel Galan, the president of CENAFE, the national school for football coaches in Spain, has suggested that the departures may be a reaction to a lawsuit he has brought against the board of directors.
Galan filed a lawsuit in September, claiming that the committee had to call an election right once after Rubiales resigned in accordance with RFEF statutes.
