South Korea announce squad for upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023
South Korea reached the quarterfinals in the last edition
In national under-17 football events, South Korea is represented by the national under-17 football team, known by FIFA to be the Korea Republic. If needed, the team may also be handled as an under-15 or under-16 squad.
Korean football was bitter over the FIFA U-17 World Cup for a long time. The senior team of the Korea Republic has never been eliminated from the FIFA World CupTM after a professional division was established there in 1983, beginning with Mexico in 1986.
During the same time frame, the U-20s have participated in all but three of the 16 U-20 World Cups held during the 1990s, while the U-23s have always been represented at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament.
On the other hand, at the same time frame, the Taegeuk Warriors and the U-17 World Cup have a tense relationship. The FIFA U-16 World Championship, the competition’s precursor, was conducted nine times between 1985 and 2001.
South Korea only made it to the finals a single time, in 1987. The squad’s 16-year hiatus came to an end in the 2003 tournament, where they lost to the USA 6-1. They experienced more heartbreak the following year while in their role as event hosts, they collapsed after the group round.

But in the previous fifteen years or so, the U-17s have progressively improved their level of competition. The dread of playing on a global platform gradually subsided after the senior team’s historic run to the FIFA World CupTM 2002 semifinals. Young players who aspired to play professionally saw their heroes, the national team, succeeding in some of Europe’s top leagues.
For instance, Son Heung-min, who advanced his nation to the 2009 U-17 World Cup quarterfinals, went on to finish as the English Premier League’s best scorer thirteen years later.
