Bhaichung Bhutia has been a name inseparable from Indian football throughout the years. The exalted former captain of the Indian football team has been one of the utmost accomplished players to grace the global stage. 

His unparalleled leadership qualities stood unrivalled during his tenure with the national team. It can also be affirmed that he played a pivotal role in resurrecting the popularity of football in India, at a time when the sport was aiming for widespread attention in the country. 

Born on December 15, 1976, the individual from Sikkim achieved his first appearance at the international stage on March 10, 1995, before turning 19. He held the record for the most-capped player for the Indian national team (82), a record that was subsequently surpassed by Sunil Chhetri.

Youngest Indian player to score an international goal

After joining the team, Bhutia proceeded to successfully net a goal against the Uzbekistan team during the 1995 Nehru Cup. This achievement marked him as the youngest player at that time to score an international goal for India, achieving this feat at the tender age of 18 years and 90 days. 

However, his record was later surpassed by Jerry Zirsanga.

First Indian player to sign a contract with an European club

Bhutia made a significant breakthrough by becoming the inaugural Indian footballer to secure a professional contract at a European club. In 1999, he embarked on his journey with Bury FC in England, thereby setting a remarkable precedent for fellow Indian players to aspire to compete in renowned international leagues.

Only Indian to win Golden Boot in a international club competition

Bhutia was honoured with the prestigious Golden Boot award during the ASEAN Club Championship in 2003, where East Bengal emerged as the champions. He demonstrated his prowess by netting a total of nine goals, including a crucial one in the final against Thailand’s BEC Tero Sasana. 

Padma Shri Award

For his exceptional accomplishments in his football career, Bhutia was awarded the Padma Shri in 2008. While several footballers had previously received this prestigious award, Bhutia stood as the only player to have earned it during his active playing days. 

Third highest goal-scorer for India

Also known as the ‘Sikkimese Sniper’, Bhaichung Bhutia had scored a total of 27 goals while representing India on the international stage. He currently holds the third position among the highest goal-scorers for the Indian national team, following Sunil Chhetri with 93 goals and IM Vijayan with 29 goals.
