ISL 2023-24: Bengaluru FC, Simon Grayson part ways by mutual consent
Renedy Singh to take charge as interim head coach.
Bengaluru FC, one of the successful clubs in the Indian Super League (ISL), has announced the departure of head coach Simon Grayson following a series of disappointing performances. The decision comes in the wake of a 4-0 loss against Mumbai City FC in a home game at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, which extended the club’s winless streak to six games.
The announcement was made on the club’s official social media platform X, with a tweet expressing gratitude to Grayson for his contributions.
The tweet read, “For bringing home silverware that had eluded us, for a fight to the finish that inspired us, for every magical night at our Fortress and for so much more. 🔵 #ThankYouSimon #WeAreBFC.”
The acknowledgement of Grayson’s efforts in guiding the team to the Durand Cup title in 2022 winning against Mumbai City FC last season which was BFC’s first title since Carles Cuadrat’s departure.
The club issued a statement stating, “Renedy Singh will take charge of the team for the forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint a new Head Coach shortly.” The club also informed about Assistant Coach Neil McDonald’s departure along with Grayson.
The Blues also reached ISL final last season in one of the most challenging circumstances.Unfortunately, Bengaluru FC ran out of luck in the final as they lost to Mohun Bagan in a penalty shootout (4-3) after a 2-2 draw at full time.
However, much was expected from Bengaluru FC this term, who are languishing in the 9th position on the ISL table, having secured only 7 points from 9 games. The club made significant investment over the summer in acquiring services of foreign stars like Keeziah Veendrop who joined the Blues fresh from the stint at Dutch first division side FC Emmen . Another summer acquisition, Curtis Main joined the team with a wealth of experience in English lower divisions.
The recent 4-0 defeat against Mumbai City FC at their home ground seemed to be the tipping point for team owner Parth Jindal. Jindal took to social media platform X even before the full-time whistle, expressing his frustration and hinting at impending changes.
“This isn’t @bengalurufc – changes are coming – we need to get back to where we belong – this is embarrassing. I’m sorry – this is beyond me – with this squad to play like this is not BFC,” stated Jindal, indicating that the underwhelming performances had prompted decisive action.
Grayson’s departure marks a significant yet much needed shift for Bengaluru FC, and the search for a new head coach will undoubtedly be underway. The club will be looking for a leader who can rejuvenate the squad, instill a winning mentality, and steer the team back to the heights they once achieved.
