Renedy Singh also gave a brief insight on the team-talk prior to the game.
Bengaluru FC suffered a 2-0 defeat in the Southern Derby against Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24. The Marina Machans won by capitalizing on two penalties, courtesy Rafael Crivellaro and Jordan Murray. This defeat adds to Bengaluru FC’s continuous difficulties, indicating the need for strategic modifications as they navigate the ISL’s competitive terrain.
The interim head coach, Renedy Singh spoke to the media at the post-match press conference. Excerpts are below:
Reflections on their defeat in the Southern derby
Renedy Singh attempted to highlight the positive aspects of today’s game while also discussing how his side struggled to keep shape and lost momentum, which led to another loss for the Blues. He said, “Tough result, but then I feel that we had started well first half with the structure that we kept. I liked the way we played in first half. In the second half, we got chances but we couldn’t play with our structure, we couldn’t play with our shape. I think that’s where our guys have to get better.”
The tactician added, “We controlled the momentum of the game in the first half. In the second half we couldn’t. After losing 4-0 and coming back here and giving a penalty away like that – that was harsh on the players. If we could have kept the momentum, if we could have kept the tempo, it wasn’t there from our side also. That’s what we have to improve. Football is not about 45 minutes, it’s 90 minutes. We got our good chances but we couldn’t capitalize. I think it was a good result but it was a little bit of immaturity from our players. But at least they will learn from here and not make the same mistakes again.”
On giving away two penalties
When asked about giving away two penalties, Renedy Singh spoke about the refereeing in the game and how the decision went against them, claiming that one of them was not a penalty and that this was where the entire match went against Bengaluru FC.
He said, “In the first half, the way they got a penalty, I think that was not a penalty at all, that was very harsh. Then again, we could have got our penalty but we weren’t awarded. If we would have got that penalty, the whole scenario of the game would have changed.”
“In the second half, of course it’s a sure penalty but then again, if you see on the other side where Siva (Narayanan) got pushed, that also would have been a penalty,” the mentor added.
Appreciation for the fans
Renedy Singh took time to thank all the supporters and underlined how they are sticking with the team no matter what, even in light of the squad’s recent poor performance. He said, “Where on earth are we going to get this type of supporters? I had spoken to the players before the game when we had a meeting. There we saw in the video supporters supporting us till the 90 minutes and after losing as well. So now, we should give something back (he told the players during the meeting).”
