In a chilly outing at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, century old hosts Mohun Bagan Super Giant faced a thrashing 1-4 defeat to table toppers FC Goa in the vital Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 clash.

The Mariners never really looked involved in the game as, from the very start the Gaurs charged the hosts & flooded them with goals. Noah Sadaoui did the initial damage by striking a penalty awarded from a Manvir Singh handball. He went on to strike a brace, accompanied by Victor Rodriguez & Martinez. Mohun got some lost prestige back when Petratos struck a marvelous free-kick in the dying minutes of the first half.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (By Rahul Patra)

Vishal Kaith – 5

Failed to stop a single shot on target, facing 3 goals in the first half. Got better with a few saves, saving some sure goals.

Sumit Rathi – 5.5

Proved his worth on being given chance with perfect passes in the initial moments. Got off colour as time passed. Was subbed off after the first half.

Brendan Hamill – 6.5

Was very good with the clearances. Also provided grounded error free passes in the initial minutes. Failed to deliver as the game aged.

Deepak Tangri – 5

Failed to do his defensive duties. Was barely seen protecting the defense line. Was subbed off after the first half.

Subhasish Bose – 6

Was not impressive in the defensive sector, tried to provide chances with a few good runs but failed. He was no match with his stature today.

Anirudh Thapa – 5

Had zero impact in the first half, failed to control the midfield or create any goal scoring chances. Seemed clueless in the field. Earned FC Goa another penalty.

Glan Martins – 5

Seemed poor in the first half, but got better in the second. Overall, had a below par performance. Was subbed for Ravi Rana later.

Dimitri Petratos – 7

Tried to strike a few shots, got sucessful in the dying moments of the first half, scoring from a spectacular free-kick. Looked like a lone warrior for the Mariners.

Manvir Singh – 6

Was caught inside the penalty box with hand-ball, awarding a penalty to FC Goa. Tried creating a lot of chances but was unlucky. Was asked to return to the dugout in the 61st minute.

Jason Cummings – 5.5

Didn’t really have an impact. Seemed lost in the pitch other than in a few runs. Was called out by coach Ferrando in the 61st minute along with Manvir.

Armando Sadiku – 6.5

Tried to prove a threat to the FC Goa defense with his creative style of play. But was not successful in penetrating the FC Goa defense.

Substitutions

L. Hnamte – 6.5

Was very much involved in the game, gave an above average performance but couldn’t create any difference.

Kiyan Nassiri – 7

Seemend pumped-up from the start. Proved to be a threat for FC Goa with his fast runs.

Suhail Bhat – 5

Failed to create any impact in the field for the Mariners.

Hugo Boumous – 5

Tried to create chances but was never really successful. Got a yellow to his name with an unnecessary foul.

Ranabhat – 6

Had a decent outing, but couldn’t excel just like his teammates.

FC Goa Ratings (By Sonal Fernandes)

Arshdeep Singh – 6

Could have done better with the ball at his feet. None of his 8 attempted long balls in the first half found their target and maybe should have stopped Mohun Bagan’s first goal since he got his hand to the freekick from a distance.

Seriton Fernandes – 7

A slow start to the match but recovered well. Hardly put a foot wrong defensively and looked well after the ball.

Odei Onaindia – 8

Defensively astute again from Odei, as he and Sandesh seem to have formed the best centre-back pairing in the league.

Sandesh Jhingan – 8

Another solid night for the India international and should have had a clean sheet but denied it due to a freekick from a long distance.

Jay Gupta – 6

Not his best night going forward but hardly put a foot wrong defensively.

Raynier Fernandes- 7

An impressive night in midfield for Raynier who seems to have gone up a level or two under Manolo Marquez.

Carl McHugh – 8

A heat map graphic late in the second half showed that the midfielder possibly covered every blade of grass on the pitch. A brilliant performance from the midfielder.

Udanta Singh- 6

Struggled on a night other attackers thrived. Put in a shift filled with energy nonetheless.

Victor Rodriguez – 7

Busy throughout the first half and scored what could possibly be a goal-of-the-season contender. Had to be taken off at half-time.

Brandon Fernandes- 8

Back to his influential best back in the side after missing the last few games due to injury. A brilliantly weighted pass to find Noah late in the first half helped his side go 3-0 up.

Noah Sadaoui- 9

A brace in the first half courtesy of a calmly taken penalty and a smart finish after being put through on goal by Brandon put his side on the way to a well-deserved victory.

Substitutions

Paulo Retre – 6

Came on at half time in place of the injured Victor Rodriguez and gave the midfield a new dimension looking after the ball well in a half when FC Goa needed to keep things calm and under control.

Boris Thangjam – 6

Provided his side with 10 minutes of much needed fresh legs on the width.

Carlos Martinez – 7

Got a much-needed goal from the penalty spot. Manolo Marquez will hope that this will give the forward some much-needed confidence boost.

Saviour Gama – 7

Came on for his customary late-match appearance to provide freshness and pace on the left wing and won the penalty for the fourth goal.
