Erling Haaland wins Sports Personality of the Year 2023 award for BBC
Erling Haaland won a treble last season with Manchester City
Erling Haaland of Manchester City has been named the 2023 BBC Sports Personality World Sport Star of the Year. After his incredible performances during City’s historic 2022–23 treble-winning campaign, the 23-year-old was named the winner.
Haaland scored 52 goals in all competitions during his first season in English football after joining Pep Guardiola’s team from Borussia Dortmund, making them the first English team to win the triple alongside Manchester United. As City clinched the Premier League for the third time in a row, Haaland set a record with 36 goals and eight assists.
In 11 games, he scored 12 goals as well, helping the Cityzens win their debut in the Champions League. Haaland scored one goal in the EFL Cup and three more in the FA Cup, which City subsequently conquered.

South Africa’s leader, Siya Kolisi, was second in the BBC Sports fans’ voting for the BBC World Sport Star of the Year award. Third place went to the triple F1 world champion, who won an incredible 19 of the 22 races this season.

The selected candidates included 24-time Grand Slam finalist Novak Djokovic, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati, the eventual champion of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and four-time Olympic gymnastics gold medallist Simone Biles.
With 19 goals and five assists in 22 appearances in all contests, Erling Haaland looks to have carried on from where he stopped off.
In 15 Premier League games, 14 of them goals and 4 assists have been scored. After 17 games, City is in fourth place, five points below leaders Liverpool (39).
However, in the Champions League, where they have won all six matches, Pep Guardiola’s team has performed better. In five matches, Haaland has scored five goals and provided an assist.
