Who are the match officials at the AFC Asian Cup 2023?

Notable names such as Abdulrahman Al-Jassim and Alireza Faghani will also officiate games at the AFC Asian Cup 2023.

Asian Football Confederation’s premier association contest, the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 is almost at the brink with the stage all set. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on 10th January 2024. The 18th edition of this contest will be seen showcasing 74 match officials, the largest-ever crew in the history of this continental showpiece.

A total of 35 referees and 39 assistant referees from the 18 member Associations have been chosen based on their technical knowledge, game management expertise, physical fitness, and past performances at the highest levels of continental and international football.

History will also be made with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, as it will make its full debut in the 18th installment of this showpiece event. Notably, the VAR was successfully implemented from the quarter-final stage of the previous edition in the United Arab Emirates.

The AFC Asian Cup 2023 has also considered the creation of new roles, such as Video Match Officials, and the expansion of current ones to guarantee that the Confederation upholds the highest standards of match officiating.

The roster for the match officials also comprises the most seasoned male officials Abdulrahman Al-Jassim of Qatar, who officiated the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 third-place game between Croatia and Morocco, and Alireza Faghani, who will officiate in his third AFC Asian Cup.
