Both Diego Forlan and Nicolas Anelka played for Mumbai City FC in India a few years back.

The 2023 AFC Asian Cup is up and running and India will open their campaign today against Australia at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan. Originally scheduled to be held in 2023, the AFC Asian Cup returns to action after a gap of almost five years.

The Blue Tigers are clubbed alongside giants Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria. This tournament will be Igor Stimac’s most high-profile assignment ever since he took over the hot seat as India’s head coach back in 2019.

Ahead of India’s opening game, footballing greats from all over the globe have sent their wishes and blessings to the Indian national team.

Diego Forlan’s comments

Uruguayan legend and former Mumbai City FC star Diego Forlan wished head coach Igor Stimac and the players the very best for the AFC Asian Cup.

“I just want to wish all the best to the Indian national team for the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. To coach Igor (Stimac) and players Apuia, Akash (Mishra), Nikhil (Poojary), Rahul (Bheke) and my friend and captain Sunil Chhetri. All the best and take care,” he said.

Nicolas Anelka’s words

French manager and former Mumbai City FC man Nicolas Anelka also sent his wishes for the national team and said that he will be watching India’s games.

“Wishing all the very best for the Indian national men’s senior team for this AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. All the best to coach Igor (Stimac) and the entire team. Do the job guys and I will be watching you. See you soon and be strong,” he added.

Peter Reid’s wishes

Former Mumbai City FC manager and pundit Peter Reid also sent his wishes and love for the Blue Tigers ahead of their first game.

“Best wishes to the Indian men’s senior football team who are competing at the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. Very good luck to the lads. My lads (Naorem) Mahesh and Amrinder (Singh) and all the lads, go and enjoy it. Lots of love and take care,” he asserted.
