JLN Stadium hosts matches for Kerala Blasters FC.

Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium Kochi (JLN Stadium), situated in the heart of Kerala, stands tall as one of the largest stadiums in India and Asia. Known for hosting exhilarating matches of the Kerala Blasters, the stadium has garnered fame and recognition for its vibrant atmosphere and the iconic yellow wave of passionate fans.

However, recent events have cast a shadow over the stadium’s safety, raising questions about its structural integrity and the potential risks it poses to spectators.

During a recent match in Kochi, an alarming incident occurred when a piece of concrete fell from the deteriorating structure, causing minor injuries to a fan. This event has ignited a significant conversation about the safety of spectators within the stadium premises.

The Asian Football Confederation’s general secretary, Datuk Seri Windsor John, had earlier hinted at potential hazards associated with the stadium’s deteriorating structure during the ISL opener, further escalating worries.

Addressing Concerns: GCDA’s Response

In response to these mounting concerns, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has taken a proactive step by inviting tenders for urgent repairs to address the deteriorating condition of the Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. In a recent discussion with Khel Now, K. Chandran Pillai, Chairman of GCDA and Srilatha P. R, Superintendent Engineer, addressed the concerns faced by fans and the public.

Immediate Action Needed After Safety Concerns Emerge

Srilatha P. R, Superintendent Engineer at GCDA, emphasized the urgency of renovating critical elements before the Indian Super League restarts in February. Assuring active monitoring, she stated, “We’re aiming to renovate crucial elements swiftly before February, considering the Indian Super League restarts then with potential fixtures in Kochi. We’re closely monitoring the situation and actively following up.”

Highlighting specific issues, she mentioned, “While the stadium structure doesn’t raise significant concerns, there are occasional issues with the tress work. Studies indicate it doesn’t require complete removal, just some repair and renovation. We’ve initiated a tender, starting with one sector as a sample before full implementation.”

Additionally, she pointed out the entry of water through construction joint holes and assured ongoing repair works to address these issues promptly. “We’ve noticed construction joint holes allowing water entry, A tender has been called for this issue as well. Various repair works are in progress to promptly address these issues.”

Addressing the visible shaking of the JLN Stadium during live telecasts due to energetic fan support, she mentioned, “We’ve already studied it, and it’s nothing to worry about. It’s an independent slab; there are no stability issues and ensuring it won’t impact the stadium’s overall structure.”

Expressing their commitment, she affirmed, “We are 100% committed to this. We need time, but we’ll do our best. We have a deep connection to this stadium, and even our family is coming to watch matches here. Rectifying issues and concerns for this stadium is our top priority. We’re proud to be associated with it and are addressing not only current but also future concerns. Our commitment extends beyond the current issues, covering every aspect of the stadium.”

GCDA’s Chairman: Confidence Amid Concerns

K. Chandran Pillai, Chairman of GCDA, dispelled reports about imminent disaster, stating, “I’m saying honestly. There is no chance for a disaster now as reports are spreading, studies are there and some renovation is needed and we are on it. We are welcoming every single true criticism and if it’s correct, we will act and do our best. There is nothing to be worried about now; the stadium is in good situation and we are completely on it, and it will remain one of the best stadiums in India.”

Chairman’s Reassurances and Efforts for Stronger Bond

Regarding the collaboration with Kerala Blasters and the support from government entities, Pillai highlighted their partnerships. “We have contracts with the club. Blasters club management is doing their best for the turf management and we have a good connection with them and looking forward to having a stronger bond with them,” he expressed.

Chandran Pillai also acknowledged the crucial role of government support in their efforts to address stadium concerns. “The government and the sports department are giving their full support for us and are so happy with their support. The state government is offering the sports policy, and it’s so helpful for us,” he concluded.

While the recent incident has sparked worry and discussions about the stadium’s safety, the proactive steps taken by the GCDA and the commitment expressed by the authorities signal a positive direction toward ensuring the safety and longevity of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi.
