Former Odisha FC coach Josep Gombau signs for Aston Villa
Gombau guided the Kalinga Warriors to play-off qualification in ISL 2022-23.
In a surprising turn of events, former Delhi Dynamos and Odisha FC coach, Josep Gombau, has been appointed as the head coach of Aston Villa’s Under-21 team. The announcement comes after Gombau’s stint with Odisha FC, where he faced both successes and challenges during the 2022-23 season.
Gombau first entered the coaching arena with Amposta and Espanyol, honing his skills before making a significant mark at the renowned FC Barcelona youth academy. His journey in football management has taken him across the globe, with managerial and coaching roles in Hong Kong, Australia, India, and the USA.
The Spanish tactician’s notable achievement includes leading the Australian Olympic team, the Ollyroos, showcasing his proficiency in developing young talent. Gombau’s coaching philosophy aligns with player development, and his diverse experiences have equipped him with a unique perspective on the global football landscape.
Aston Villa, expressed their delight in welcoming Gombau to the organization. In an official statement, the Birmingham-based Premier League club announced, “Aston Villa is pleased to announce the appointment of Josep Gombau as the club’s new Under-21 Head Coach.”
Gombau’s recent spell with Odisha FC brought both highs and lows, with the club achieving a historic play-off qualification in the ISL 2022-23 season. Unfortunately, their journey was cut short after a defeat against Mohun Bagan, leading to Gombau’s departure from the club.
The statement concluded, “We believe his extensive experience in player development and his diverse background will contribute significantly to the growth of our youth squad.
