The sides are set to meet in a final once again to decide the winner of the League Cup.

Chelsea and Liverpool are set to reignite their rivalry in an exciting final of the 2023-24 EFL Cup. Both sides have been impressive in their respective cup runs and hope to win the season’s first major trophy when they meet at Wembley Stadium on 25 February 2024.

Chelsea had to bounce back in the second leg against Middlesbrough after a 1-0 defeat in the first leg. The Blues went on to demolish their opponents and secure a 6-1 win to become 6-2 winners over the two legs of their semi-final. On the other hand, Liverpool won their semi-final across two legs by a 3-2 aggregate score. They won the first leg against Fulham by 2-1 and drew the second leg by a 1-1 scoreline.

In what is to be Jurgen Klopp’s final EFL Cup campaign, after his announcement of leaving the club at the end of the season, the Reds are motivated to win the trophy. Chelsea, however, will be hoping to bring their fans some joy as their Premier League form has been forgettable.

As excitement builds ahead of an iconic finale, here is a look at the last five cup final meetings between the two sides (Liverpool vs Chelsea) across all competitions:

2004-05 League Cup

The final of the 2004-05 League Cup (EFL Cup) was played at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff between Liverpool and Chelsea. The Blues won the memorable fixture by a 3-2 scoreline after extra time. John Arne-Riise and Antonio Nunez scored for the Reds while Steven Gerrard’s own goal in addition to strikes from Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman was enough for Chelsea to lift the trophy.

2011-12 FA Cup

Chelsea and Liverpool locked horns in the final of the 2011-12 FA Cup. Back then, Roberto Di Matteo was the caretaker manager of the Blues and guided them to the trophy over the Reds in an entertaining final which ended 2-1 in favour of the London-based club. Ramires gave Chelsea the lead and Didier Drogba added a second in the second half. Andy Carrol scored for LFC in the second half but the Merseyside club could not conjure up an equaliser and lost the final.

2021-22 League Cup

The last time Chelsea and Liverpool met in the final of the EFL Cup was during the 2021-22 season. The game is famously remembered for a mindblowing penalty shootout which was won by Liverpool by an 11-10 score after both sides failed to score in the regulation period plus extra time. Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the decisive penalty in the sudden death after having been subbed on in place of Edouard Mendy precisely for the penalty shootout.

2021-22 FA Cup

The 2021-22 season was the highest point in the rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool. Both highly successful English clubs, boasting of world class players in their squads, met in the final of two domestic tournaments. It was the first time since 1993 that two teams met in the final of both domestic cup competitions.

The Reds were triumphant in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, winning both competitions on penalties, breaking the hearts of the Blues. In the final of the 2021-22 FA Cup, LFC secured the trophy by winning the penalty shootout by a 6-5 score after no goals were scored across 120 minutes plus added time.

2023-24 League Cup

The upcoming 2023-24 League Cup final, also known as the EFL Cup, will be the fifth occasion that Chelsea and Liverpool meet in a final of a major trophy. Judging by their previous meetings in finals, one can expect plenty of fireworks and memorable moments from the game.

The sentiments will be running high in the Liverpool camp due to it being Jurgen Klopp’s final EFL Cup appearance while Chelsea will hope to play the role of party-poopers and secure the cup for themselves. The Reds have won the competition the most number of times (9) and adding a tenth title will be a huge motivator.
