AFCON 2023 will start on 14th January and will end on 12th February

The Confederation of Africa Football has given players and teams a much-needed increase in prize money before the 34th iteration of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast later this month, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The amount of cash awarded to the AFCON 2023 winners will increase by 40%, according to a Thursday announcement by CAF.

The announcement released on the football regulatory body’s website states that the champions of the competition will get $7 million, which is $2 million higher than the prize money awarded at the previous edition in Cameroon.

The African football championship’s runners-up are receiving $4 million, the two semi-finalists $2.5 million each, and the four quarter-finalists $1.3 million apiece.

Two years ago, 24 countries played in Cameroon for the 33rd tournament of the AFCON, which was relocated from 2021 because of the COVID-19 epidemic. This was made possible by CAF allowing eight additional teams than the 16 who participated in the previous edition in 2019. The prize money was reviewed as a result of the biennial event change.

Winners Algeria took home $4.5 million in 2019, while Senegal came in second with $2.5 million.

CAF voted to substantially enhance the monetary awards during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations draw in Cameroon. Champions Senegal received $5 million, while Egypt, who finished in second place, received $2.75 million.

$2.2 million was awarded to each of the eliminated semi-finalists, while $1.8 million went to the quarter-finalists.

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON and all of its other major competitions,” CAF President Patrice Motsepe remarked in response to the most recent increase. The $7 million prize money for the AFCON champions represents a 40% increase over the previous prize money.

“I am confident that a portion of the prize money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations.”

The prize money awarded to AFCON winners has increased, allowing the region to overtake South American champions to narrow the gap with their European rivals.

UEFA awarded $11 million to Italy, the victors of the July 2021 European Championship, and $7.7 million to England, who finished second (cash prizes for winning qualifying matches excluded).

The South American version, the Copa America, awards $6.5 million to the victorious team and $3.5 million to the runner-up.
