Morocco lead Group F in AFCON 2023

At the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023), Silas Katompa Mvumpa helped the Democratic Republic of the Congo draw 1-1 with Morocco. After Morocco’s seven-minute lead, thanks to a goal from Achraf Hakimi, DR Congo rallied to secure a well-earned point in Group F.

With four points after two matches for Morocco and two for DR Congo, both teams are still undefeated. After coming off the bench, DR Congo’s Silas Katompa Mvumpa earned a point for his team in a 1-1 Group F draw against Morocco, the defending champions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Six minutes in, Achraf Hakimi nodded home following a corner set up by Hakim Ziyech to give the 2022 World Cup semifinalists an early advantage in the hot San-Pedro circumstances.

Following VAR’s determination that Selim Amallah had committed a handling offence, Cedric Bakambu struck the post, denying the DRC a penalty.

Despite this, the underdogs remained persistent and got their reward in minute 76 when Silas, a fellow substitute, slipped the ball past the back of the net from Meschack Elia. The game was intense and full of tough challenges.

After defeating Tanzania 3-0 in their opening match, Morocco is now leading Group F with four points, while the DRC is down to two after a 1-1 draw with Zambia.

DRC Congo are still very much in the running for a last-16 slot, and they will play Tanzania to finish in second place. Morocco will take the group by defeating Zambia on Wednesday.

With the exception of matches played prior to 1998, when Congo DR represented Zaire, the two teams have faced off five times in fierce competition.

In their head-to-head record, the Atlas Lions are superior, having won 2-1 and drawn the other two games.
