AFCON 2023: Equatorial Guinea win Group A; Nigeria advance in second ahead of hosts Ivory Coast

AFCON 2023 hosts Ivory Coast finished third in their group
Group A matches in AFCON 2023 have ended and we have got our two teams that have made it to the knockout stage of the competition.
Equatorial Guinea stuns hosts Ivory Coast with a 4-0 win over them and takes Group A in AFCON 2023. This loss means that Ivory Coast only collected three points in the group stage and needs luck on their side to ensure qualification to the next round.
Emilio Nsue scored the opener in the 42nd minute to give his side the lead. The team led by a goal until the 73rd minute. Jean Krasso doubled the lead and then Nsue scored his second goal of the night. Jannick Buyla scored the last goal of the night to wrap up things for his side.
Nigeria were taking on Guinea-Bissau, who were sitting at the bottom of the table. The Super Eagles had to earn a win by a higher margin to ensure the top spot in Group A.
Jose Peseiro’s side were gifted a goal towards the end of the first half. Guinea-Bissau’s centre-back Opa Sangante scored at the wrong end of the field.

A single goal was enough for the Super Eagles to seal a spot in the knockout stage.
Equatorial Guinea topped the group with seven points. Nigeria also scored the same number of points and finished unbeaten in the group. They came second because of the goal difference.
There are worrying signs for hosts Ivory Coast, who lost two matches and finished third in the table. They depend on other teams’ results. 12 teams directly qualify to the next round after finishing first and second in their respective groups. The other four teams will be selected from six teams that will finish third in their groups.
