AFCON 2023: Mali advance to quarters after narrow win over Burkina Faso; Ivory Coast next opponents

Mali were gifted the first goal
Mali advanced to the quarter-final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) after winning their Round of 16 tie against Burkina Faso. The match ended 2-1 in favour of the winning team.
The winning team made a great start to the match and forced Edmond Tapsoba to score the opening goal of the match. Tapsoba netted past his own goalkeeper and gave his opposition the lead inside the first couple of minutes. At the end of the first half, the score remained 1-0.
Burkina Faso came in with a lot of passion in the second half. However, Mali had some other plans and doubled their lead within two minutes into the second half.
Lassine Sinayoko scored the second goal of the match to put his side into the driving seat.
Bertrand Traore was not letting his side go home that easily. Burkina Faso were awarded a penalty and the forward converted the chance in the 57th minute.
This goal completely changed the dynamic of the game. Mali managed to keep their lead and went on to win this match at the end of the 90 minutes.

The winning team will face hosts Ivory Coast in the final eight of the competition. Ivory Coast won their match on penalties against the defending champions, Senegal. After a poor start to AFCON 2023, Ivory Coast recovered well.
In the other quarter-final matches, Nigeria takes on Angola and DR Congo faces Guinea. Cape Verde will face the opponents of the upcoming match between Morocco and South Africa.
Things are getting more interesting as the African championship is reaching its final stages. After Senegal’s loss, it is confirmed that we will have a new winner.
