AFCON 2023: Namibia shock Tunisia with late winner

Deon Hotto scored the winning goal
Namibia started their AFCON 2023 with a shocking 1-0 win over one of the top-seeded sides, Tunisia. Deon Hotto of Orlando Pirates scored the only goal in the match.
Tunisia were the favourites to win their opening Group E match. They have a much better FIFA rank than Namibia.
The first saw both teams taking a conservative approach. Namibia were better than their opponents and took more shots. Both teams were unable to break each other’s defences and the first half ended goalless.
Both teams tried to lift the tempo in the second half. Tunisia kept the possession but Namibia took more chances in the match. Deon Hotto proved to be the difference maker and went on to score the winner in the 88th minute of the match. Bethuel Muzeu provided the assist for the goal.
This win means that Namibia are leading Group E with three points in one match. Mali and South Africa will play the last match of the evening.

Earlier, Burkina Faso also secured a late win over Mauritania in their Group D match. Bertrand Traore came off the bench and took the spot-kick that was awarded deep in injury and stoppage time.
The two matches played today went down the wire. Namibia’s win over Tunisia has opened the group. Mali and South Africa have a strong squad. Tunisia’s loss means that they will now need to win both their group matches and finish in the top three.
Namibia only needs a win or a couple of points to guarantee a place in the knockout stage.
