AFCON 2023: Nigeria record massive win over hosts Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast are third in AFCON 2023 Group A

Nigeria upset hosts Ivory Coast as William Ekong scores from the spot to give his side a 1-0 win in AFCON 2023.

The Super Eagles get their first three points in the tournament. Ivory Coast, on the other hand, suffered their first defeat of the tournament.

Both teams played a goalless first half. Jean-Louis Gasset named a strong starting 11 for this match. Jean Grasso (goalscorer in the first match) and Jeremy Boga led Ivory Coast’s attack. Al Ahli’s Franck Kessie and Al Nassr’s Seko Fofana were the two superpowers in the midfield. The hosts were aiming for their second win in AFCON 2023.

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro also played a strong team. Victor Osimhen led the attack and was in search of his second goal of the 2023 edition. AC Milan’s Samuel Chukweze, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman supported the Napoli forward in the attack.

Osimhen was unable to score his second goal but managed to change the game for the Super Eagles. He won a penalty for his side. Defender William Ekong stepped up to the occasion and scored from the spot. Nigeria managed to defend their lead and took three points from this game.

This win means that Nigeria go second in the points table. They played a 1-1 draw in the first match against Equatorial Guinea. Ivory Coast are third after one win in two games.

Equatorial Guinea are sitting at the top of the table with four points. They earned a dominant 4-2 win in the first match of the evening. Emilio Nsue scored the first hat-trick of the tournament and led his side to their first win of AFCON 2023. They will have a tough test against the hosts in the final group game. Nigeria, on the other hand, have a chance to win the group in their final game.
