AFCON 2023: Ismaila Sarr stars as Senegal beat Cameroon

Sadio Mane scored his first goal in AFCON 2023

The AFCON defending champions, Senegal, have made an excellent start to their maiden title defence after winning their second game in the group stage against Cameroon. Sadio Mane & Co. won this match 3-1.

Senegal are one of the favourites to lift AFCON 2023 and they have shown the reason why the Lions of Teranga are so highly rated in the continent.

Aliou Cisse named a strong starting 11. His team took the lead in the 16th minute. Tottenham Hotspur’s Pape Sarr created the first goal for his team and Ismaila Sarr converted the chance. Manchester United’s Andre Onana was in goal for the Cameroonians. He was unable to keep the opposition out.

The defending champions doubled their lead in the 71st minute of the match. This time Ismaila Sarr was the creator and Habib Diallo registered his first goal of the tournament.

Things were not looking good for the Cameroon national team. Jean Charles Castelletto pulled one goal back in the 83rd minute. Olivier Ntcham created the goal for the centre-back from a corner.

Al Nassr’s Sadio Mane created a goal in the first match but was unable to score any. It looked like the same outcome in the second match but Mane was not letting this opportunity go. Idrissa Gueye created the third goal for the Lions of Teranga in 90+5 minutes and Mane converted that opportunity.

After two games, Senegal leads Group C and Cameroon remains in third place with one point. They face Gambia next in a must-win match. Cisse’s side have already booked their berth in the knockout stage.

Earlier in the day, Cape Verde booked their place in the knockouts with a 3-0 win over Mozambique.
