AFCON 2023: Senegal win 3 in 3; Cameroon snatch late win
Cameroon stay in AFCON 2023
AFCON 2023 Group C has been concluded and we have our top two teams. Aliou Cisse’s Senegal made a perfect start to their title defence by winning all three matches in the group stage.
All the drama was created in the second match. Cameroon snatched a late win in a five-goal thriller to book their place in the next round.
Senegal manager Aliou Cisse named a strong playing 11 for this match, especially in the midfield. The defending champions started strong but were unable to break the deadlock in the first half. Except for three bookings, there was not enough action in the first half.
Just past the hour mark, Abdoulaye Seck gave his side the lead. The centre-back scored with his head from a set-piece situation and the defending champions were 1-0 up in the 61st minute. It looked like Senegal were heading to a narrow win but lliman Ndiaye had some other plans. Sadio Mane created his second goal in the competition and Ndiaye scored his first in the competition in 90+2 minutes. The match ended 2-0 in favour of Mane & Co.

In the other match, Cameroon had to wait until the injury and stoppage time to score a winner. This match also ended goalless in the first half. Karl Toko Ekambi had some other ideas in the second half and opened the scoring before the hour mark.
Gambia were not letting their opponents take three points and scored a goal in the 72nd minute to equalise things. Ebrima Colley gave his side the lead in the 85th minute. Cameroon equalised in the 87th minute, thanks to an own goal from James Gomez.
Christopher Wooh was the hero of the nation and scored a 90+1 minute winner to clinch the second place in the group. Gambia were eliminated and Guinea are likely to make it to the next round.
