Kalvin Phillips is looking for some game time before Euro 2024

Kalvin Phillips, a midfield player for Manchester City, is expected to sign a loan deal with West Ham United. David Moyes’ team defeated many Premier League competitors to acquire the England midfielder.

The 28-year-old Phillips was being pursued by several clubs this month, including Fulham, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace. His goal is to play first-team football and earn a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Barcelona was also considering a loan deal for the midfield player, but they were unable to finance it. Nixon said that West Ham will pay the player’s salary as well as a bonus, but oddly, there won’t be a buyout clause in the agreement. This implies that after the conclusion of the current campaign, Phillips will rejoin Man City.

Having made just 10 appearances for the treble champions in all competitions and just four in the Premier League, he has been eager to arrange a move away from City this month.

Transfer specialist Alan Nixon disclosed on his Twitter that West Ham has now officially acquired the player’s rights.

Nixon said that West Ham will pay the player’s salary as well as a bonus, but oddly, there won’t be a buyout clause in the agreement. This implies that after the conclusion of the current campaign, Phillips will rejoin Man City.

It was earlier claimed that the Etihad Club requested a loan fee from Newcastle totalling £7 million (€8 million) in addition to the player’s salary. It is uncertain if the Hammers would be able to afford such a sum.

In addition to this need, manager Eddie Howe had doubts about Phillips’ compatibility with his playing style and his capacity to play consecutive games after spending the better part of his 18 months at Man City as a reserve.

Surprisingly, City has not included a buyback mechanism in the loan agreement with West Ham because of the absence of playing time.

Pep Guardiola’s long-term plans do not appear to include Phillips. Although consistent playing time could increase Phillips’ estimated transfer value (ETV) of €19 million, City will probably fail to recoup the €49 million they spent in Leeds for him in the summer of 2022.
