Lee Carsley has been seen as Southgate’s successor of Three Lions

In an attempt to position himself as a potential successor to Gareth Southgate, England Under 21 coach Lee Carsley has turned down a job offer to lead the Republic of Ireland. Once resulting in the under-21 team to an important win at the European Championship this past summer, the prior Everton and Birmingham midfield player, who has 40 caps for Ireland, has been praised by the FA.

Should Southgate leave after his current deal runs out later this year, he could become among the top indigenous applicants to take over as manager of England. Since it became apparent during the summer that Stephen Kenny’s team would not probably compete for the European Championship, the Football Association of Ireland has been gunning for Carsley, and the previous week they launched a fresh bid.

The Irish were ready to give the 49-year-old a four-and-a-half-year deal that would encompass both the 2026 World Cup qualification season and the 2028 European Championship, which is going to be played throughout the Home Nations with a total of six matches to be held in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. That’s how much they wanted the player.

Carsley is still devoted to the FA for the time being, but if his employers search elsewhere for Southgate’s successor before his contract expires in December, he’ll probably find work in club football.

There aren’t many other British managers that the FA could choose from, though, with Steve Cooper and Graham Potter hoping to return to club regulations after being fired by Nottingham Forest and Chelsea, respectively, and Eddie Howe dedicated to Newcastle.

To find an administrator for Ireland’s upcoming matches in March against Belgium and Switzerland, the FAI will now need to search abroad. Anthony Barry, an assistant manager of Bayern Munich, is one candidate to consider.
