Morocco were eliminated by South Africa in the Round of 16 of AFCON

Walid Regragui announced back in December that he would resign as Morocco’s manager if they failed to advance to the AFCON semifinals.

Morocco were riding high after being the first country in Africa to go to the World Cup semifinals, and they even have high hopes for the continent.

In an interview with Moroccan media and as published by Foot Mercato, Atlas Lions coach Walid Regragui revealed his desire for international success. Morocco needs to be one of the top four teams competing on the African continent, in his opinion.

After losing to South Africa in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui accepted full blame for the team’s unexpected elimination while bemoaning their lack of creativity in Tuesday’s 2-0 setback.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, the Atlas Lions, suffered a setback by South Africa at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro after blowing several goal-scoring opportunities. They became the most well-known team to leave the competition.

Proof In stoppage time, Teboho Mokoena sealed the victory by curling home a free kick granted for a last-man challenge that resulted in the sending off of Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. Makgopa had scored against the course of the game in the 57th minute.

With just under five minutes to play, Morocco received a penalty for a handball; however, Achraf Hakimi struck the crossbar with his attempt, giving Morocco a great chance to tie the score.

Morocco, which created history at the FIFA World Cup 2022 by being the first African side to reach the semi-finals, was seeking to win its first African Cup of Nations championship since 1976.
