From an early age, Phil Foden was expected to become a superstar, and he hasn’t disappointed anyone. With Manchester City’s treble victory in 2022–2023 under his belt, the Mancunian has become one of the most valued players in the world and has won everything at the Etihad.

As the Citizens Academy graduate’s role in the Spanish first team increased, Pep Guardiola advocated patience with him. However, Pep’s fostering and harbouring of the playmaker’s brilliance has helped shape Foden into the magnificent star he is today.

Compared to other of his fellow English players, Foden has a purpose for wearing his #47 shirt at City. He is one among many English superstars to have a distinctive shirt number.

This isn’t another Trent Alexander-Arnold or Declan Rice story, where the players have persisted with their unique jersey numbers since their respective first-team triumphs. The narrative surrounding Foden’s #47 is a moving one.

Since breaking into Pep Guardiola’s side, Foden has decided to don the #47 shirt as an homage to his grandfather, Ronnie, who passed away at the age of 47.

Sergio Aguero reportedly offered Foden the #10 shirt when the Argentine confirmed he would be leaving the team after the 2020–21 campaign. But the inventive midfield player thought about Aguero’s suggestion for a moment before rejecting it.

“The ten shirt is such a big number in the club, but I just have a thing with 47,” Foden continued. “I’d like to create my own legacy and keep that number.”

When Aguero joined from Aston Villa in August 2021 for a then-British record £100 million fee, Jack Grealish inherited Aguero’s jersey.
