Some of these managers shocked the continent by their achievements at the AFC Asian Cup.

Managers in football play a pivotal role in the success of any team. They are responsible for shaping the team’s style of play, tactics, and overall strategy. A manager’s ability to effectively communicate the vision, motivate players and make crucial decisions during matches can make a significant difference in a team’s performance.

They are tasked with selecting the starting line-up, making substitutions, and adjusting tactics based on the flow of the game. They operate in a high-pressure environment and in addition to formulating game strategies, they are also tasked with orchestrating team cohesion and morale.

The AFC Asian Cup has a rich history of coaching legends who have guided their teams to glory. A skilled manager understands the strengths and weaknesses of their players and maximizes their potential, fostering a cohesive and winning team dynamic. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top five best managers from the AFC Asian Cup 2023:

5. Amir Ghalenoei (Iran)

The 60-year-old coach was named as head coach of Team Melli in March 2023. Under his leadership, Iran advanced to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup semi-finals, where they lost to Qatar 3-2. Ghalenoei could have ended Iran’s 48-year title drought in the Asian Cup but missed the golden opportunity.

He took responsibility for the defeat and also pointed out the missed opportunities. There are rumours that he will be given a contract extension till 2026 as he is considered the right manager to lead Iran to glory.

4. Héctor Cúper (Syria)

On 2 February 2023, Cúper was appointed as the head coach of the Syria national team on a contract of undisclosed length. He managed to recruit three of his countrymen of Syrian descent such as Ezequiel Ham, Ibrahim Hesar and Jalil Elías ahead of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup held in Qatar.

Under Cúper, Syria achieved their biggest success ever, by advancing past the group stages of the tournament. This was the first time Syria managed to achieve such a feat after six previous participations ended in the group stages.

3. Tintín Márquez (Qatar)

An experienced Spaniard drafted in from Qatar Stars League side Al Wakrah, Márquez was appointed less than a month from the Asian Cup after the Qatar FA sacked former Real Madrid boss Carlos Queiroz. He has done an amazing job with the national team concisely and has shown that he can help Qatar Football grow and achieve more in international football.

Like Felix Sanchez, the former Qatar national team coach, if he is given more time, then undoubtedly he will help the Maroons to perform well against more quality nations.

2. Petar Šegrt (Tajikistan)

On 27 January 2022, the Tajikistan Football Federation announced Šegrt as their new head coach. Under Šegrt, Tajikistan managed to achieve a historic feat and qualified for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which is also the country’s first-ever appearance in a major continental competition, having failed to qualify for the Asian Cup five times, previously.

Šegrt also guided Tajikistan to win the 2022 King’s Cup in Thailand and the 2023 Merdeka Tournament in Malaysia. However, the Persian Lions lost to Jordan in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup and were eliminated from the tournament.

1. Hussein Ammouta (Jordan)

In the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, Jordan qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stage. They took down the mighty Iraqi team in the round of 16 and defeated Tajikistan to enter the semi-final.

He once again helped the national team to beat the Asian powerhouse South Korea, in a game which saw Jordan completely outclass Jurgen Klinsmann’s army with their performance. For the first time ever, Jordan reached the final of the Asian Cup and became the lowest ranked team to do so. Unfortunately, they suffered a defeat in the final to hosts Qatar.
