The Highlanders beat East Bengal FC by a two goal margin.

Super Saturday unfolded a high voltage fixture on a cold evening in Guwahati as NorthEast United FC settled scores with East Bengal. The Highlanders put up a brilliant performance against their neighbors and clinched their third win of the campaign.

Juan Pedro Benali’s side got the perfect start, thanks to their latest import Tomi Juric. The 2015 Asian Champion opened the scoring in the fifth minute and gave his side an early lead. And moments later, Redeem Tlang set up Nestor Albiach for a second goal as NorthEast United went into the break with a 2-0 lead.

East Bengal came out all guns blazing as Nandha pulled one back in the 53rd minute before NorthEast United’s target man from down under scored one of the best goals in the league this season. Juric scored his second goal from outside the box and put his side 3-1 up.

Felicio Forbes made things more interesting and scored the second goal for East Bengal in the final few minutes of regulation time. East Bengal kept on trying, but NorthEast United managed to hold their nerves.

After the game, Tomi Juric spoke to Khel Now and shared his thoughts on the game. Here’s what he said:

Thoughts on the performance

The forward shared his thoughts on his side’s performance and said that he is very happy and pleased to get all three points against the Red and Gold brigade.

“I’m very happy and very pleased because we got three points. It was an important game because East Bengal are close with us on the table at the moment. It was very important for us to get the win this evening. Personally, I’m very happy and pleased to get my campaign off with a couple of goals. So, I couldn’t have asked for any better,” he asserted.

Response from the fans

Tomi Juric has already won the hearts of NorthEast United fans with his brace against East Bengal. When asked about the response that he has received from the fans so far, Juric said, “I am very pleased. I’m very excited to begin my career here in India. And the fans have been great so far and I hope they continue to come in numbers and we can perform and win games for them,” he signed off.
