Christoph Freund was elected Bayern Munich’s Sporting Director in 2023

Christoph Freund, the Sports Director of Bayern Munich, answered some questions from us about his tenure there, the process his staff uses to sign players, and the qualities they look for in a potential recruit. He also told us about how Bayern informed Thomas Tuchel that his time on the team was up. To learn more, answer the following questions.

1 How are you preparing for tomorrow night?

Christoph Freund: It was a busy week, and it was a special week also. It will be a big game tomorrow, and we also lost the last three games. but we have to focus on what’s coming forward.

2. Can you give us insight into what preparation is going on?

Christoph Freund: It’s not really a typical week because most of the time we play two times, and in the future we play international, Tuesday, and Sunday Cup games, and next time league games and some rest. We have training week also. When we have a normal week without any international week, players train, not full-time, so today was the last training. Now we will have Lazio. Tomorrow we will have a meeting, and we will go to the hotel.

3. In important matches like these, how moral are the players?

Overall, we have many international team players, and they know how to prepare, and it’s not really new and experienced for them to play the game, so it’s not really a special game.

4. Can you tell us about working with Thomas Tuchel?

Tuchel is a really good coach and person, and I have been working with him for six months. He is very good and clear about what he wants. He is a very good coach.

5. What was the mood when the Tuchel exit announcement was made?

Christoph Freund: It was a special decision. It was time Bayern made this announcement, and we still have some time to work with Tuchel. We hope there is a little bit of freedom for the team, and we hope not to give up in the league. We also have the Champions League. We hope there is new energy, and hopefully it was the right decision.

6. How was Tuchel’s reaction?

Christoph Freund: His reaction was professional.

7. It feels like a new era at Bayern, and what do you hope from this group?

Christoph Freund: In the last few years, the club has changed a lot, and it is very important for the future to create a strong team and management. Overall, we had to find trust, work together, dig deeper, and keep our work close together.

8. If Bayern win two trophies this season, will they reconsider their decision this campaign?

Christoph Freund: It’s a clear decision, and it stands.

9. Do you feel Bayern needs to revamp the playing squad and bring in new faces?

Christoph Freund: Yeah, sure, this is part of the change, and a lot of players won a lot of titles together, but we also need to think about the structure of the squad and bring in new faces.

10. Who is responsible for selecting managers?

Christoph Freund: Board and the sporting director for us to find the right manager for the future, and our goal is to find a manager who stays for a long time.

11. How has Harry Kane’s life at Bayern been, and how does he affect the dressing room?

Christoph Freund: He is an outstanding player, a very kind guy who doesn’t speak much in the dressing room, is really positive on the pitch, and is also an influence on the whole club. He will certainly become a big face for the club.

12. Have held meetings with players as a sporting director?

Christoph Freund: Yes, sure. We had a meeting with Kane and Muller, and we talked about what we needed to change and how we would structure the squad.

13. You’re not an ex-Bayern player, but you’re working as a sporting director. How does it feel?

Christoph Freund: I have worked as a sporting director and bring my skills here to help the club make better decisions.

14. One of the Asian players, Kim Min-jae, who has he brought to the dressing room, and how does he help?

Christoph Freund: He is also a big name at Bayern, and I like him because his character is also professional, and he is also a champion in Italy. He is a very nice guy and brings great quality to the pitch. But he is a really good guy, and he has a long-term contract at Bayern Munich.

15. Mr Christoph, What made you feel like coming to Bayern? You had other options as well.

Christoph Freund: It’s one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and I’ve also been following the club for many years, learning about their history, how they developed, and why I joined, reflecting on the club and mine. but overall, I had a chance to work with Bayern Munich.

16. When you recruit players, what do you look for in a player when they come here? Because Bayern is not the same as

Christoph Freund: Sure, it’s different when you play with Bayern. There’s a different pressure, and they are after those players who have the right mentality and character. One of the most important things for the team is to find the right character, which is also important for the future, as well as quality and skills. We also need to find players who can thrive when the pressure is very high.
