FIFA World Cup 1990 winner & West Germany legend Andreas Brehme passes away at 63

At the age of 63, Andreas Brehme passed away West Germany’s legend scored the game-winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final. Franz Beckenbauer’s team defeated Argentina 1-0 in Rome thanks to the left-back’s game-winning penalty kick in the 85th minute.
In his time as a player, Brehme represented Germany 86 times. At the club level, he featured for Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan. According to the German daily Bild, Brehme passed away in Munich on Monday night, presumably from a heart attack.
Brehme was allegedly brought to a clinic’s emergency room near his flat on Ziemssenstrasse, but for some reason was not able to be saved.
Schaefer told the DPA: ‘It is with deep sadness that I announce on behalf of the family that my partner Andreas Brehme died suddenly and unexpectedly tonight as a result of a cardiac arrest.
‘We ask that you respect our privacy and refrain from asking questions during this difficult time.’
According to the publication, Brehme was devastated by his former mentor and coach Beckenbauer’s passing last month.
He departs from his spouse Susanne Schaefer and their two grown sons from their union with Pilar.

The player known as Brehme was a contemporary full-back with a strong goal-scoring record for a defender. He wasn’t scared to press forward to cross the ball or shoot.
He was extremely skilled at free kicks and penalties, and in the 1990 semi-final match against England, he was chosen to take the pitch for West Germany, setting up later misses from Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle.
Brehme participated in the 1986, 1990, and 1994 World Cups as well as the 1984, 1988, and 1992 European Championships throughout his ten-year international career, which included eight goals.
In 1984, 1990, and 1992, he was included in the best team of the competition. In addition to his 1990 victory, he played in West Germany’s defeats in the 1986 and 1992 finals against Denmark and Argentina.
