Frenkie de Jong close to possible Barcelona exit in summer 2024

Frenkie de Jong has grown unhappy at Barca after club’s lack of competitiveness

Reports state that Manchester United’s efforts to sign Frenkie de Jong, a long-time transfer target, have gained momentum.

After the Ajax manager moved to Old Trafford in 2022, the 26-year-old Dutch midfielder was strongly connected to a reunion with Erik ten Hag.

However, De Jong turned down the opportunity to play for the Premier League’s biggest clubs after Barcelona accepted a £71.5 million bid from the Red Devils.

Even though his contract expires in 2026, rumours are now circulating that he would be amenable to joining Manchester United in the summer.

Journalist Lluis Canut has stated that midfielder De Jong is dissatisfied by Barcelona’s lack of championships since he joined the Nou Camp—the team has only won one La Liga championship, one Copa del Rey, and one Spanish Super Cup.

Addressing Esport3, Canut stated:

“De Jong has not given the green light, but he is no longer closing the door on leaving Barca as he did two seasons ago, when he had interest, especially from Manchester United, in going to play with the coach who had him at Ajax – Ten Hag.

“At the moment, De Jong is a little disappointed by the situation at Barca because he has not managed to turn the expectations that had been generated at the time when he signed into important titles.

“De Jong would be willing to leave Barca at the end of this season.”

At Ajax, where he played for two seasons under Ten Hag, De Jong won the Eredivisie and advanced to both the Europa League final and the Champions League semi-final.

In 2019, he signed a contract valued at approximately £65 million to join Barcelona. Since then, he has made 205 appearances, contributing to 21 goals and scored 16 goals himself.
